Церковні гімни свята Верховних Святих Апостолів Петра і Павла нам кажуть те, що святі апостоли були з’єднані духом:

The hymns of the Church for the feast of the Prime Apostles Peter and Paul tell us that the holy Apostles were united in spirit:

Якими похвальними вінками завінчаємо Петра й Павла,* роз’єднаних тілом і з’єднаних духом, найперших між богопроповідниками? Той—перший між апостолами, а цей – більше від інших потрудився. Їх бо, справді, достойно вінчає безсмертною славою Христос Бог наш, що має велику милість.

With what praises shall we crown Peter and Paul, separated in body, yet united in spirit, the first among the preachers of God? One, the first of the Apostles, and the other who labored more than the rest. Christ our God crowns them with eternal glory, since He has great mercy.

Чим вони були з’єднані?—духом покаяння, тому що ці два великі апостоли мали подібний досвід, і цей досвід їм дав чесноту смиренности.  Бо, Святий Апостол Петро, застрашений і пригноблений, у Страсний четвер, тричі заявив, що не знає Ісуса Христа. Коли ж дещо пізніше півень запіяв і Ісус Христос, переходячи ув’язнений подвір’ям, споглянув на Петра, він вибіг з подвір’я, пішов на самому і гірно плакав. Пам’ять про цей упадок завжди тримала Петра в покорі, каятті і в жалю до самої смерти. Святий Климентій свідчить, що святий Петро гірко плакав кожний раз, коли чув голос півня. Подібним способом, Святий Павло до смерти покутував.  Він вважав себе негідним зватися апостолом Христовим, кажучи—«Я гонив Церкву Божу.» В дусі тієї покути оба верховні святі апостоли працювали, трудилися, терпіли, жертвували все на вівтарі посвяти для Христа і спасіння безсмертних душ.

And by what spirit were they united? – the spirit of repentance, because these two great Apostles had a similar experience, and this experience gave them the virtue of humility. Saint Peter, on the one hand, afraid and demoralized, on Holy and Great Thursday, three times denied that he even knew Jesus Christ. And when, sometime later, the cock crowed and Jesus Christ, being held prisoner in the courtyard, looked at Peter, he ran away from the courtyard, fled into solitude and wept bitterly.  The memory of this event always moved Peter to humility, repentance and sorrow to the point of death. Saint Clement witnesses that Saint Peter wept bitterly every time he heard a cock crow.  In the same way, Saint Paul did penance for the rest of his life. He considered himself unworthy to be called an apostle, saying: “I persecuted the Church of God.” Both of the prime Apostles work in this spirit of repentance, they labored, they endured, they sacrificed everything on the altar dedicated to Christ and the salvation of immortal souls.

Ми повинні імітувати цього духа покаяння. Ми також повинні покутувати до смерти, пам’ятаючи наші гріхи, бо це є фундаментом християнського життя. Особливо, коли інші люди ображають нас, ми повинні пам’ятати те, що ми також є негідними. 

We should imitate this spirit of repentance. We too should do penance for the rest of our lives, remembering our sins, since this is the foundation of the Christ life.  Especially, when other people insult us, we should remember that we too are unworthy.
