Ця неділя завжди присвячена в календарі Церкви нашій преподобній матері Марії Єгипетській, тому що вона є для нас чудовою моделлю покаяння. Церква знає, що у нас є ще один тиждень Великого Посту, перш ніж ми прийдемо до Квітної неділі та наступних днів Святого та Великого Тижня.

This Sunday is always dedicated in the calendar of the Church to our venerable mother Mary of Egypt, because she is a great model of repentance for us. The Church knows that we have only one more week of the Great Lent, before we come to Palm Sunday and the days of Holy and Great Week that follow.

Обставини, що навколо нас у світі, щодня нагадують нам про нашу потребу звернутися до Бога в покаянні. В даний час наш Бог використовує наш повалений світ як інструмент, щоб навчати нас і повертати наші серця до Нього, так, як Він це робив багато разів у минулому. Сучасні проблеми нашого світу не суто медичні, не суто наукові, не суто політичні. Усі наші проблеми - це стільки ж чи більше духовних проблем, і тільки лік цих проблем є оновленим життям молитви та відповідності до волі Бога. Бог карає нас, тому що Він любить нас і хоче повернути нас до Нього. Насправді Святе Письмо попереджує нас остерігатися, якщо у нас немає страждань і жодної дисципліни від Бога. Ви, батьки, часто дисциплінуєте, іноді навіть караєте своїх власних дітей, але було б серйозною зухвалістю і грубістю взяти на себе, щоб дисциплінувати дітей інших людей. Ні, Бог є нашим Отцем, тому що Він вважав за потрібне докоряти нам, і, мусимо визнати, його лагідний голос дуже потрібен.

The circumstances all around us in the world are reminders to us daily of our need to turn to God in repentance. Currently, our God is using our fallen world as an instrument to instruct and turn our hearts to Him, just as He has done many times in the past. The current problems of our world are not purely medical, not purely scientific, not purely political. All of our problems are as much or more spiritual problems, which only a renewed life of prayer and conformity to God’s will can remedy. God chastens us, because He loves us and desires to bring us back to Him. In fact, the Scriptures warn us to beware if we have no sufferings, no discipline from God. We should beware, because that would mean that we are not His sons and daughters. This is understandable. You who are parents frequently discipline, sometimes even punish your own children, but it would be grave audacity and rudeness to take it upon yourselves to discipline other people’s children. No, God is our Father, because He has seen fit to reprimand us, and, we must confess, his gentle chiding is much needed.

Багато в чому, ця чума COVID-19 є символічною, через її серйозну, яскраву реальність. Бог послав нам фізичну чуму, тому що ми так довго ігнорували духовні чуми, які постійно вражають наш світ. Наш світ зазнає нелюдських ідеологій: секуляризму, трансгендерної ідеології, гомосексуалізму, помилкових релігій, таких як ісламу, соціалізму та багато іншого. І все-таки, що було нашою реакцією на ці випади? Чи ізолювались ми від них, приділяючи час тиші та молитві? Чи прищепили ми себе та інших проти цих чум, вивчаючи та навчаючи правди Ісуса Христа? На жаль, я не думаю, що ми можемо стверджувати, що і ми зробили це.

In many ways, this plague of COVID-19 is symbolic, because of its serious, stark reality. God has sent us a physical plague, because we have so long ignored the spiritual plagues that continually afflict our world. Our world is plagued by inhuman ideologies: secularism, transgender ideology, homosexualism, false religions such as Islam, socialism and many more. Yet, what has been our response to these plagues? Have we isolated ourselves from them, giving time to silence and prayer? Have we inoculated ourselves and others against these plagues by learning and teaching the truth of Jesus Christ? Sadly, I do not think that we can claim that we have done either.

У дні Старого Завіту Бог наказав Своїм людям спостерігати за тижневою суботою як днем відпочинку від праці, а також дотримуватися кожного сьомого року як суботнього року за землею, даючи землі річний відпочинок від обробітку. Тим не менш, люди замість того, щоб слідувати Божим заповідям, наповнили землю несправедливістю через свою жадібність і хтивість. In the days of the Old Testament, God commanded His people to observe the weekly Sabbath as a day of rest from labor, as well as to observe every seventh year as a Sabbath year for the land, giving the land a year’s rest from cultivation. Nevertheless, the people, instead of following God’s commands, filled the land with injustice, because of their greed and lust. Therefore, God used the armies of the neighboring nation of Babylonia to punish His people. The foreign armies swept in and destroyed everything, taking much of the population of the land into exile in Babylonia. Then, finally, the land was silent, still. Then, finally, all the Sabbaths that had been neglected and omitted for many years, for centuries, in fact, were finally observed. Finally, the land had a chance to rest.

Аналогічне спостереження про Вухань зробив анонімний автор та спостерігач. Після спустошення вірусу в місті вперше панує тиша. Вперше в пам’яті когось, можна чути звуки співів птахів, і небо синє, не обтяжене парами та димом, що зазвичай завуальовує місто.

An anonymous author and observer has made a similar observation about Wuhan. Since the virus’ devastation, there is silence in the city for the first time in anyone’s memory. For the first time in anyone’s memory, the sound of birds singing can be heard, and the sky is blue, unencumbered by the fumes and smog which normally veils the city.

Хоча Бог позитивно не бажає запустіння, спричиненого вірусом, Він дозволив цьому статися, щоб Він зміг внести необхідні зміни в нас. Він запрошує нас прийняти тишу, наповнену Його присутністю.

Although God has not positively willed the desolation caused by the virus, He has permitted it to happen, so that He can bring about a needed change in us. He is inviting us to embrace a silence that is filled with His presence.

Свята Марія Єгипетська - це не лише чудова модель покаяння, але вона також навчає нас щодо значення ізоляції та мовчання. Роки, які вона провела в пустелі, були, зрештою, дуже мовчазними роками, але її тиша та замкнутість дозволили їй сповнитись любов’ю до Бога. Аналогічним чином нація Ізраїлю в Старому Завіті мала блукати по пустелі протягом сорока років, перш ніж Бог дозволив їй увійти в Обітовану землю. Таким же чином багато святих у віках свідчили, що їм довелося пройти часи випробувань, ізоляції, мовчання та глибоких страждань, перш ніж досягти святості, яку їм підготував Бог. Свята Марія, народ Ізраїлю та всі святі були вилікувані тими переживаннями, хоча вони були дуже болісними.

Saint Mary of Egypt is not only a wonderful model of repentance, but she also teaches us concerning the value of isolation and silence. The years she spent in the desert were, after all, very silent years, but her silence and isolation made it possible for her to be filled with the love of God. In a similar way, the nation of Israel in the Old Testament had to wander in the desert for forty years before God allowed it to enter into the Promised Land. In just the same way, many saints throughout the ages have testified that they had to pass through times of trial, isolation, silence and profound suffering before attaining to the sanctity, which God had prepared for them. Saint Mary, the people of Israel and all the saints were healed by those experiences, although they were very painful.

Таким же чином Бог закликає нас до більшої близькості з Ним, зазнаючи його ніжних виправлень. Тепер уся наша увага повинна приділятися тому, щоб ми відповідали волі Божій, змінюючи наше життя з новим фокусом на тишу та молитву.

In the same way, God is calling us to greater closeness to Him through suffering his gentle corrections. All our attention now should be on conforming ourselves to the will of God, changing our lives with a renewed focus on silence and prayer.

Я вірю! Допоможіть моєму невір’ю! /I Do Believe! Help My Unbelief!

Щоразу, коли ми читаємо Євангеліє, ми хочемо намагатися увійти в оповідання та епізоди і застосувати їх значення в нашому власному житті. Ми хочемо замислитись над тим, як ми схожі на персонажів в оповіданнях, і хочемо молитися щодо цих міркувань і приймати змістовні рішення щодо того, як ми можемо змінити своє життя з Божою допомогою, щоб стати людьми, яких бажав Бог, коли Він створив нас.

Whenever we read the gospels, we want to try to enter into the stories and episodes and apply their meaning to our own lives. We want to reflect on the ways that we are like the characters in the stories, and we want to pray concerning these considerations and make meaningful resolutions concerning how we can change our lives with God's help, in order to become the persons, which God wanted when He created us.

Якби ми роздумували над усім повідомленням Святого Письма від початку до кінця, ми незабаром усвідомимо, що наша мета в цьому житті - любити, шанувати і служити Богові, як і наш катехизис, як нас навчали, коли ми були маленькими дітьми. Незалежно від того, які особисті невдачі ми могли зазнати, доки ми любимо Бога і поводимося відповідно до цієї любові, ми виконали свою мету. Ми прожили успішне людське життя. Ми переможці, так би мовити. З іншого боку, незважаючи на те, що наші особисті досягнення можуть бути величезними, якщо ми не любили Бога щиро, ми є невдахами у найглибшому та повному сенсі. Ми втратили все, що варто мати.

If we were to reflect on the whole message of the Scriptures from beginning to end, we would soon realize that our purpose in this life is to love, honor and serve God, just as our catechism as little children taught us. Regardless of what personal failures we may have experienced, as long as we love God and behave according to that love, we have fulfilled our purpose. We have lived a successful human life. We are winners, so to speak. On the other hand, despite the fact that our personal accomplishments might be enormous, if we have not loved God sincerely, we are losers in the most profound and complete sense. We have lost everything worth having. 

У той же час, ми бачимо в загальному навчанні Святого Письма, що наша любов до Бога є відповіддю на набагато більшу любов до нас. Наша любов до Бога така ж різна, як і Його любов до нас, як крапля води відрізняється від океану. Таким чином, ми помічаємо в усьому Писанні, що Бог ненавидить бачити самовіддачу в нас. Він хоче, щоб ми покладалися на Нього. Наприклад, у книгах пророків Бог сварить Своїх людей, бо вони продовжують робити розумні політичні союзи, щоб врятувати себе, а не звертатися до Нього в молитві та покаянні. Ми повинні визнати, що ми багато в чому однакові. Ми постійно намагаємось покластися на себе. Бог хоче, щоб ми покладалися на Нього.

At the same time, we see in the overall message of Scripture that our love for God is an answer to His far greater love for us. Our love for God is as different as His love for us as a drop of water is different from the Ocean. Thus, we notice throughout Scripture that God hates to see self-reliance in us. He wants us to rely on Him. In the books of the prophets, for example, God scolds His people, because they keep looking to make clever political alliances to save themselves, rather than turning to Him in prayer and repentance. We should recognize that we are much the same. We are constantly trying to rely on ourselves. God wants us to rely on Him.

Таким чином, ми можемо бачити себе чітко відображеними в характерах сьогоднішнього євангельського читання. Ми дуже схожі на біснуватого хлопчика, тому що нас порушують вороги і ми дуже, дуже слабкі. Дуже часто наші пристрасті, захоплені демонами, кидають нас у вогонь. Це означає, що ми легко піддаємося гніву, нетерпінню та страху. І все ж, часто ці самі пристрасті кидають нас у воду. Ми спокушаємось задоволенням усіх видів, і потрапляємо в лінощі, переїдання та похоть.

Thus, we can see ourselves clearly reflected in the characters of today's gospel reading. We are very like the demon-possessed boy, because we are beset by enemies and very, very weak. Very often our demon-controlled passions throw us into fire. This is to say that we get easily stirred to anger, impatience, and fear. Yet, often these same passions throw us into water. We get tempted by pleasure of all kinds, and find ourselves falling into sloth, over-eating and lust.

Однак, у той же час ми схожі на батька хлопчика, який дійсно хоче вірити у силу Господа Ісуса, щоб врятувати нас, але у нас є труднощі, бо ми слабкі у вірі. Ми визнаємо, що віра - це дар і що ми повинні молитися за віру. В принципі ми віримо в те, що "все можливе тому, хто вірить", але в практичних деталях нашого життя ми часто відчуваємо велику тривогу щодо майбутнього.

At the same time, however, we are like the boy's father, who really wants to believe in the power of the Lord Jesus to save us, but we have difficulties, because we are weak in faith. We recognize that faith is a gift, and that we have to pray for faith. We believe in principle that "everything is possible for one who believes," but in the practical details of our life, we often have great anxiety about the future.

Що ж, цей наш великий піст - це час звернутися до Бога. Нам потрібно молитися про збільшення віри, навчаючись шукати відповіді в своєму житті від Бога, а не шукати власних ресурсів та сильних сторін.

Well, this Great Fast of ours is a time to turn to God. We need to pray for an increase in faith, learning to look to God for answers in our lives, rather than looking to our own resources and strengths.

Це не повинно нас дивувати, що колір і форма цього зростання у вірі - це не те, чого ми могли б очікувати. Бути самотнім у своїх домівках, без утіхи Святих Христових Таїнств, без фізичного спілкування з іншими членами нашої парафії, справді дуже несподівано. Але знову ж таки, ми покладаємось на Бога. Ми знаємо, що Його мудрість набагато перевершує нашу власну. Бог дав нам цього разу, з урахуванням усіх обставин, щоб зміцнити наше спілкування з рештою Церкви. У цей час ми переживаємо лише смак повсякденного життя членів Церкви, які живуть у широкій частині земної кулі. Ми отримуємо глибше розуміння тих, хто має лише спорадичний доступ до Євхаристії, Святої сповіді та інших таїнств Церкви. Насправді, коли багато католиків отримують ці таїнства на землях переслідування, вони отримують їх з великим ризиком для свого життя.

It should not surprise us that the color and shape of this growth in faith is not what we would have expected. To be alone in our homes, without the consolation of the Holy Mysteries of Christ, without the physical fellowship and communion of the other members of our parish, is very unexpected indeed. Yet, again, we rely on God. We know that His wisdom far surpasses our own. God has given us this time, with all the circumstances attendant on it, in order to strengthen our communion with the rest of the Church. In these times, we are experiencing just a taste of the daily life of members of the Church, who live in broad swathes of the globe. We are receiving a deeper understanding of those who have only sporadic access to the Eucharist, Holy Confession and the other Mysteries of the Church. In fact, when many Catholics receive these Mysteries in lands of persecution, they receive them at great risk to their lives.

I want to address especially our heads of households (usually fathers). I want to remind you of what, I am sure, you already know. It is your responsibility to call together your household (the domestic church) for prayer and the worship of God. We do not have a vacation from worshiping God on the Sunday and obligatory feasts, because we cannot go to the church. No, it is your responsibility to lead your household to worship God in your home. You may make use of a live-streamed Liturgy from the internet or you can lead your household in praying the Moleben of the Most Holy Mother of God, substituting the Apostle and Gospel of the Sunday, instead of the Gospel of the Moleben.

Remember most of all: We rely on God. God is going to get us through this time, and the faith and communion of the Church will be stronger because of it.
