Як ми дізнаємося про добрі справи, які Бог підготував для нас? How will we know the good works that God has prepared for us to do?

 

Для нас цікаво звернути увагу на деталі саме цієї євангельської історії. По-перше, ми знаходимо, що Господь Ісус свідомо пливе на інший берег Галілейського моря до берега навпроти Генісарета, до Десятимістя, де переважають язичники. Перебуваючи там, він виліковує чоловіка, біснуватого Легіоном, групою особливо лютих демонів. Потім він знову сідає в човен і повертається на єврейську сто́рону озера. Усі ці деталі підтверджують точку зору, що Господь навмисно переходить на інший берег, щоб здійснити це конкретне лікування. У цілому ця коротка віньєтка є маленьким зображенням усього служіння Господа Ісуса. Це мікрокосм всієї мети Втілення, в якому Господь приходить, щоб врятувати Свої створіння, як євреїв, так і язичників, від влади диявола. Таким чином, кожен із нас може побачити себе в образі біснуватого Легіоном. Христос прийшов спеціально для кожного з нас, ніби ми єдина людина. Своїм Втіленням Він визволив нас від влади Лукавого.

It is interesting for us to note the details of this particular gospel story. We find, first of all, that the Lord Jesus deliberately sails to the other side of the Sea of Galilee to the shore opposite Gennesaret, to the Gentile-dominated area of the Decapolis. While there, he cures the man possessed by the Legion, a group of particularly fierce demons. Then, he gets back into the boat and returns to the Jewish side of the lake. All these details support the view that the Lord purposely goes over to the other shore, in order to perform this specific cure. Taken as a whole, this short vignette is a small image of the entire ministry of the Lord Jesus. It is a microcosm of the whole purpose of the Incarnation, in which the Lord comes to rescue His creatures, both Jews and Gentiles, from the power of the devil. Thus, each of us is able to see his or herself in the figure of the man possessed by the Legion. Christ has come specifically for each one of us, as if we were the only human being. By His Incarnation, He has liberated us from the power of the Evil One.

Далі євангельська історія описує наќаз Господа Ісуса чоловікові, який вилікувався від володіння Легіоном. Господь Ісус сказав йому: «Повертайся додому і проголошуй усім, що Бог зробив для тебе». Євангеліє говорить нам, що чоловік був слухняний цьому наказу. Він прогол́ошував у «всьому Десятимісті» те, що Ісус зробив для нього. Іншими словами, ця проста людина була просвітлена щодо божественності Господа Ісуса. У цих деталях ми бачимо чудовий збіг з тим, що святий Павло говорив нам у читанні послання. Там Павло розповідає нам дуже величні та позачасові речі. Він говорить нам, що у Христі ми вже піднесені й перебуваємо в Небесному Царстві з Богом, нашим Отцем. Він зробив це для нас як дар. Ми не зробили нічого, щоб заслужити це. Бог, тільки Своєю волею, примирив нас із Собою. Крім того, на славу Свого Імені Він приготував для нас певні добрі справи. У випадку з людиною Герасена, одержимою Легіоном, ми побачили ту саму реальність. Бог заздалегідь підготував, щоб цей чоловік був апостолом для своїх сусідів у Десятимісті. Бог підготував його проповідувати божественність Ісуса, Сина Божого, язичницьким народам того регіону. Сповнений вдячності за своє звільнення від влади диявола, цей чоловік виконав свою мету Божого плану. Він виконав добрі справи, які Бог приготував для нього.

The gospel story goes on to describe the Lord Jesus’ command to the man cured from the possession of the Legion. The Lord Jesus told him: “Return home and proclaim to all what God has done for you.” The gospel tells us the man was obedient to that command. He proclaimed in “all the Decapolis” what Jesus has done for him. In other words, this simple man was enlightened concerning the divinity of the Lord Jesus. In these details, we see a beautiful overlap with what St. Paul was saying to us in the epistle reading. There, Paul tells us very magnificent and timeless things. He tells us that, in Christ, we are already exalted and seated in the Heavenly Kingdom with God our Father. He has done this for us as a free gift. We have not done anything to deserve it. God, by His will alone, has reconciled us to Himself. In addition, for the glory of His Name, He has prepared certain good works for us to do. In the case of the Gerasene man, possessed by the Legion, we saw this same reality. God had prepared beforehand for this man to be an apostle to his neighbors in the Decapolis. God had prepared him to preach the divinity of Jesus, the Son of God, to the pagan peoples of that region. Full of gratitude for his liberation from the power of the devil, this man fulfilled his purpose in the plan of God. He performed the good works that God had prepared for him to do.

Що з нами? Чи можна побачити таку саму вірність і в нашому житті? Бог визволив кожного з нас від влади диявола через Святі Тайни Хрещення і Миропомазання. Крім того, Він знову і знову відновлював наше визволення в Тайні Покаяння, тому що ми продовжуємо впадати в гріх, хоча поступово просуваємося до нашої мети: досконалої відповідності Христу, Який є нашим Уч́ителем і Головою. Безперечно, що Він, у Своїй великій мудрості, підготував для нас певні добрі справи. Чи ми робимо те добро, яке Він запланував для нас? Як ми дізнаємося, що нам робити і чи ми це робимо?

What about us? Can this same faithfulness be seen in our lives too? God has rescued each and every one of us from the power of the devil through the Holy Mysteries of Baptism and Chrismation. Furthermore, He has renewed our liberation time and time again in the Mystery of Repentance, because we continue to fall into sin, even though we make gradual progress toward our goal: perfect conformity to Christ, Who is our Master and Head. It is a certainty that He, in His great wisdom, has prepared certain good works for us to walk in. Are we doing the good that He has intended for us to do? How will we know what we are to do and if we are doing it?

Це життєво важливі питання для кожного нашого особистого життя у Христі, і єдиний спосіб знайти на них відповідь – це розмовляти з нашим Богом у молитві. У молитві ми повинні робити три речі: ми повинні ПРОСИТИ, щоб Бог прол́ив світло на обставини нашого життя; ми повинні СЛУХАТИ Бога, коли Він відкриває Себе, особливо в Святому Письмі, розмірковуючи над Його словами, оскільки вони стосуються нас; і ми повинні ДІЯТИ відповідно до Його натхнення, приймаючи конкретні та спеціфичні рішення. Таким чином, брати і сестри, молитва стає для нас джерелом життя. Якщо ми вірні молитві, Бог відкриває нам, що ми повинні робити і якими ми повинні бути, щоб успадкувати Царство Небесне в його повноті.

These are vital questions for all our individual lives in Christ, and the only way to find answers to them is to correspond with our God in prayer. In prayer we must do three things: we must ASK for God to shed His light on the circumstances of our lives; we must LISTEN to God as He reveals Himself, particularly in the Scriptures, pondering His words as they pertain to us; and we must ACT on His inspirations by making concrete and specific resolutions. In this way, brothers and sisters, prayer becomes a fountain of life for us. If we are faithful to prayer, God reveals to us what we must do and what we must be to inherit the Kingdom of Heaven in its fullness.
