Today, I would like to meditate on the entire sweep of the
actions of the Lord Jesus in the gospel reading. In this story centering on the
miraculous feeding of the five thousand, we find the following elements in the
following order: The Lord Jesus teaches the people, then, noting that the hour
is becoming late, He miraculously feeds the people, and then, finally, His
disciples withdraw to be my themselves, while He dismisses the crowd. The basic
order that is here given ought to be very familiar to us, because it is the
order of our Divine Liturgy. In the Divine Liturgy, the Lord Jesus teaches us
through the readings of the Holy Scriptures, then He feeds us with the true
food of His Body and Blood, conveying to us His very Life and Light, and then,
finally, He bids us withdraw to be by ourselves for a time.
It is this last element that is very often neglected by us,
but, nevertheless, it is so essential to the development of our relationship
with the Lord. We have to depart to be by ourselves for a time, especially
following Holy Communion, for this time is used for very sincere and heartfelt
prayer, especially acts of thanksgiving for all the things that our Lord has
done in giving us the great gift of salvation. In order for our relationship
with our God to deepen, we must spend time in intimate conversation with Him,
and there is no better time to do this than when He is nearest to us, when we
have just received Him in the Holy Eucharist.
Indeed, if we neglect this habit, if we fail to go apart by
ourselves for a few moments to give thanks and to speak intimately with the
Lord at this time, then we will find that our relationship with Christ our God
is languishing in other ways as well. This is only natural. If we neglect to
give thanks to Christ when He is nearest to us, then we will certainly be
neglectful of His presence at other times. After all, the Mystery of the
Eucharist is so tremendous that it demands our attention and concentration on
what it really is, and every aspect of our behavior is changed to suit what it
really is. Sometimes, because of the pervasive influence of the culture around
us, we forget that the truths of faith are objective truths. Faith is a way of
knowing. Other truths in our life are based on information that comes from our
senses, but our senses can be deceived. The truths of faith are based on the
authority of the Creator, Who cannot deceive or be deceived.
We should not think that we need to go apart for a long time
necessarily. No, on the contrary, a short but fervent conversation with the
Lord, expressing thanksgiving to Him for all His benefits is better than a long
time, absorbed in willful distraction and reverie. Even with the important
personages of the world, a long audience is not always preferable. Nor does a
long audience always make the best impression. No, our thanksgiving after Holy
Communion should be as short as necessary, but as fervent as possible, filled
with sincere love. Our thanksgiving after communion is also capable of becoming
the paradigm for the rest of our life of prayer in communion with Christ. All
our prayers can be as short as necessary, but as fervent as possible. We should
remember that the fervor and love that we are talking about here are not
emotional. Whether or not the emotions cooperate with our efforts is a thing of
indifference. No, real love is found in the will. It is a decision. We decide
to will the good of the other. In this case, the “other” is God.
Now, in our current circumstances, our thanksgiving after
communion is very difficult, because of our need, perhaps, to assist with
cleaning the chapel and packing the church supplies. Yet, in this case, we
should make a firm resolution not to omit our thanksgiving, but to do it at our
first opportunity, perhaps even after our arrival back home.
