Довіра до Бога або впевненість у собі та самооцінка Trust in God or self-confidence and self-esteem

 

Бог насолоджується людською недостатністю. Коли ми приносимо свою недостатність Богові та у своїй бідності просимо Його виправити її, тоді Він любить наповнювати наше життя сторицею, про яку так часто говорить Євангеліє. З іншого боку, коли ми вважаємо свої здібності, таланти тощо достатніми, Бог насолоджується тим, що показує нам нашу недостатність, бо Він насолоджується істиною. Він є Істиною.

God delights in human insufficiency. When we bring our insufficiency to God, and, in our poverty, ask Him to remedy it, then He loves to fill our lives with the hundredfold that the Gospel so often speaks about. On the other hand, when we think of our abilities, talents, etc. as sufficient, God delights in showing us our insufficiency, because He delights in truth. He is the Truth.

Ми живемо в культурі, де існує психологічна тенденція, що включає ствердження та актуалізацію. Основне переконання полягає в тому, що людині потрібна самооцінка, довіра до власних здібностей і талантів, що призводить до все більшого р́озвитку цих здібностей і талантів, доки людина не зможе повністю реалізувати свій потенціал. Частиною процесу формування самооцінки є усунення обм́ежувальних переконань за допомогою стверджень, які часто повторюються як мантри. Одне з популярних стверджень — «Я достатній», що означає, що моїх здібностей достатньо, щоб подолати будь-які перешкоди в моєму житті, які заважають мені самореалізуватися. Проблема, однак, полягає в тому, що саме це ствердження об'єктивно хибне. Брати і сестри, ми  недостатні. Тільки Бог достатній. Якщо ми не покладаємося на Нього, ми загублені.

We live in a culture in which there is a psychological trend involving affirmation and actualization. The core belief is that what human beings need is self-esteem, a trust in their own abilities and talents, which leads to a greater and greater development of those abilities and talents until the person’s full potential can be actualized. Part of the process of building self-esteem is to eliminate self-limiting beliefs through affirmations, often repeated like mantras. One popular affirmation is “I am enough,” signifying that my abilities are sufficient to meet and overcome whatever obstacles there are in my life, which impede me from my self-actualization. The problem, however, is that the affirmation itself is objectively false. Brothers and sisters, we are not enough. Only God is sufficient. If we do not rely on Him, we are lost.

Насправді, людська недосконалість є на кожній сторінці Святого Євангелія. Наприклад, кілька тижнів тому ми мали євангельське читання з Євангелія від Матeя про множення хлібів. Там ми це чітко бачимо. П'яти хлібів і двох риб ніяк не вистачить, щоб нагодувати п'ять тисяч людей, і жодна кількість повторюваних тверджень не змінила б цього факту. Так само, у сьогоднішньому євангельському читанні ми бачимо, можливо, ще більш відрезвляючу істину: навіть нічна робота недостатня. Рибалки працювали всю ніч і нічого не вловили. Ми знаходимо ту саму істину, про яку йдеться також у Старому Завіті. Цар Давид каже нам у Псалмах: «Якщо Господь не будує дому, то даремно будують його ті, хто його будує; якщо Господь не пильнує міста, то даремно пильнують його ті, хто його охороняє». Все це стосується і нашого життя. Усі ми можемо працювати до знемоги, але якщо Бог не поширить Свого благословення на нашу працю, вона вийде нанів́ець, бо ніхто з нас не є достатнім сам по собі.

In fact, human insufficiency is on every page of the Holy Gospels. For example, a number of weeks ago, we had the gospel reading from the Gospel According to Saint Matthew of the multiplication of the loaves. There we see it plainly. There is no way that five loaves and two fish are sufficient to feed five thousand people, and no amount of repeating affirmations would have changed that fact. Similarly, in today’s gospel reading, we see perhaps an even more sobering truth: Even working all night is not sufficient. The fishermen worked all night, and they caught nothing. We find the same truth referred to also in the Old Testament. King David tells us in the Psalms: “If the Lord does not build the house, those who build it build it in vain; if the Lord does not watch over the city, those who guard it keep watch in vain.” All of this is true in our life as well. All of us can work our fingers to the bone, but if God does not extend His blessing to our work, it will come to nothing, because none of us is sufficient in ourselves.

Чеснота смирення, справжнє, точне розуміння того, ким є Бог і ким є ми, веде нас до одного висновку: панівн́а культура навколо нас неправильна. Нам не потрібна впевненість у собі та самооцінка. Нам потрібна довіра, глибока віра в наш статус синів і дочок Бога у Христі, єдиному, Єдинородному Синові Божому. Ця проста, любляча довіра спонукає нас стати джерелом милосердя і для тих, хто нас оточує. Життя вірою завжди породжує діла віри, тоді як життя згідно з впевненістю в собі та самооцінкою може призвести лише до плодів егоїзму.

The virtue of humility, the true, accurate estimation of who God is and who we are, leads us to one conclusion: the prevailing culture all around us is wrong. We do not need self-confidence and self-esteem. We need trust, a deep faith in our status as sons and daughters of God in Christ, the unique, Only-Begotten Son of God. This simple, loving trust leads us to become a source of mercy for those around us as well. Living by faith always brings forth the works of faith, while living according to self-confidence and self-esteem can only bring forth the products of selfishness.

Життя вірою в дусі смирення призводить до зміни наших пріоритетів. Продовжуючи працювати, ми усвідомлюємо, що працюємо не самі. Наша робота залежить від благословення Бога, Який нас створив, як визнав цар Давид у Псалмах, коли сказав: «Нехай буде на нас благодать Господня. Дай успіх ділу рук наших. Дай успіх ділу рук наших». Це фундаментальне розуміння спонукає нас звертатися до Бога в молитві в усіх наших справах і шляхах.

Living by faith in the spirit of humility has the effect of reforming our priorities. While we continue to work, the fundamental realization is that we do not work alone. Our work depends on the blessing of the God, Who made us, just as King David acknowledged in the Psalms when he said, “Let the favor of the Lord be upon us. Give success to the work of hands. Give success to the work of our hands.” This fundamental insight leads us to turn to God in prayer in all our works and ways.
