Без віри догодити Богові неможливо.

Під час сумних подій після Французької революції дю Пон створив щось на кшталт святилища у вітальні свого будинку в Турі. Центральним елементом кімнати була ікона Обличчя Господа Ісуса, як воно зображено на Покрові Вероніки, також відома як Святий Обрузь. Перед іконою горіла лампада, і ті, хто мав недуги, приходили, молилися перед іконою та були помазані олією з лампи. За період проживання дю Пона в цьому будинку сталося понад тридцять тисяч чудес.

Without faith, it is impossible to please God

I remember reading a number of years ago the biography of the great, 19^th century wonder-working saint Leon du Pont. In the sad events of the aftermath of the French Revolution, du Pont established something of a sanctuary in the front living room of his home in Tours. The centerpiece of the room was an icon of the Face of the Lord Jesus as it appears on the Veil of Veronica, otherwise known as the Holy Napkin. The icon had an oil lamp burning before it, and those with infirmities would come, pray before the icon, and be anointed with the oil from the lamp. Over the period of du Pont’s residence in that house, over thirty thousand miracles took place.

One day, a young woman came in the company of family members to pray at this makeshift shrine. She had a cancerous lesion on her arm. Leon du Pont spoke with her and her family briefly and then knelt down to pray as usual. At the conclusion of the prayers, du Pont anointed the young lady with the oil from the lamp. They then examined the lesion to see if there was any change, but there was no sign of any improvement. Du Pont then insisted that the whole process be repeated, but again, there was no change. Again and again, over the space of many hours, du Pont directed the young woman and the family to repeat the process. Finally, the young woman’s family members began to make excuses, suggesting that they had tried, but, evidently, it was not God’s will to heal. At this point, du Pont turned to the young woman and scolded her directly, “It is God’s will to heal, but you are not healed because of your lack of faith!” Receiving the saint’s severe scolding, the woman wept, and she and her family knelt again to continue their prayers. At the end of those prayers, du Pont anointed the lady once again with the holy oil from the lamp. This time, when they examined the lesion, they found that it had entirely disappeared.

Послання святого апостола Павла до євреїв нагадує нам, що без віри догодити Богові неможливо. Святий апостол далі пояснює, що ми повинні вірити в Його існування і вірити в Його благость. Нам потрібно вірити, що Він Той, Хто винагороджує тих, хто щиро шукає Його.

The Letter of the Holy Apostle Paul to the Hebrews reminds us that without faith it is impossible to please God. The Holy Apostle goes on to explain that we must believe that He exists, and we must believe in His goodness. We need to believe that He is One Who rewards those who sincerely seek Him.

 

Віра повинна мотивувати нас. Не страх, не задоволення.

Ми живемо у світі, де дії часто мотивовані або страхом, або задоволенням. Є ті, хто навіть намагався прийняти покликання шлюбу через страх. Вони боялися, бо старіли та були самотні, тому одружилися, але виявили, що це не те, чого вони очікували. Їхній страх змусив їх зробити жахливу помилку з далекосяжними наслідками.

Faith must motivate us. Not fear, not pleasure.

We live in a world in which action is often motivated by either fear or pleasure. There are those who have even tried to embrace the vocation of marriage out of fear. They became afraid because they were aging and alone, and so they got married, only to discover that it was not what they expected it to be. Their fear caused them to make a terrible misstep with far-reaching consequences.

З іншого боку, у світі існує епідемія молоді, яка втратила будь-який сенс життя через звичне використання електронних пристроїв. Залежні від шуму, який заполонив їхні серця, вони не уявляють, чим зайнятися, коли не можуть знайти нічого цікавого на Netflix чи численних інших подібних платформах. Існує Бог, Який любить їх і співчутливо кличе їх, але вони не можуть Його чути, бо Він говорить у тиші. Однак тиша їм огидна. Їм потрібен суворий докір святого, такого як Леон дю Пон: «У вас немає віри!». Їм потрібна реколекція, суттєва детоксикація від шуму, який заражає їхній внутрішній світ.

On the other hand, there is an epidemic of young people in this world, who have lost all sense of life’s meaning, because of their habitual use of their electronic devices. Addicted to noise, which has invaded their very hearts, they cannot imagine what to do with themselves once they can find nothing interesting on Netflix or numerous other such platforms. There is a God Who loves them and is compassionately summoning them, but they cannot hear Him, because He speaks in silence. Silence, however, is abhorrent to them. What they need is the stern rebuke of a saint like Leon du Pont, “You have no faith!” They need retreat, a substantial detoxification from the noise that infects their interior world.

Часто ці дві речі можуть одночасно мотивувати наші дії, тому що потяг і відраза завжди переплетені в нашому житті в цьому світі. Те, чого ми боїмося, і те, чого ми бажаємо, завжди існують пліч-о-пліч.

Often these two things can be motivating our same actions at the same time, because attraction and aversion are always wrapped up together in our life in this world. What we fear and what we desire are always side by side.

 

Наша відповідь у вірі на Божу любов до нас – це наполегливість. Ми не можемо дозволити собі втомитися від любові.

Найбільша загроза, з якою ми стикаємося, – це не повна втрата віри. Це байдужість. Ми маємо ту саму спільну тенденцію в усіх наших фундаментальних стосунках. Байдужість – це буквально втома від любові. Люди в стосунках різного роду втомлюються, виснажуються, їм набридає зобов'язання та обов'язки, яких вимагає від них любов. У нашому житті з Богом, як і в усіх інших наших стосунках, ми повинні розпізнати це як спокусу та наполегливо дотримуватися своєї мети любити.

Our response in faith to God’s love for us is perseverance. We can’t allow ourselves to get tired of love.

The greatest threat that we face is not the outright loss of faith. It is lukewarmness. We have the same common tendency in all our fundamental relationships. Lukewarmness, tepidity, is literally getting tired of love. People in relationships of all sorts become tired, fatigued, bored with the obligations and duties that love requires of them. In our life with God, just as with all our other relationships, we must recognize this as temptation and persevere in our resolution to love.

Жінка з сьогоднішнього євангельського уривку наполегливо молилася до Господа Ісуса, і за цю наполегливість вона була винагороджена. Бог добрий, і Він винагороджує тих, хто щиро шукає Його. Нам потрібно бути наполегливими. Нам потрібно звертати увагу на попереджувальний знак того, що ми впадаємо в байдужість у наших стосунках з Богом. Безпомилковим попереджувальним знаком байдужості є нехтування дрібницями духовного життя: ранковими молитвами, вечірніми молитвами, нашим молитовним життям загалом, дисципліною посту тощо.

The woman in the gospel reading today persevered in her petition to the Lord Jesus and she was rewarded for that perseverance. God is good and He rewards those who sincerely seek Him. We need to persevere. We need to watch for the warning sign that we are falling into lukewarmness in our relationship with God. The infallible warning sign of lukewarmness is neglect of the little things of the spiritual life: the morning prayers, the evening prayers, our life of prayer in general, the discipline of fasting, etc.
