Брати й сестри у Христі—

Коли Євангеліє Від Святого Матея було перекладено на грецьку мову, перекладач прочитав старо-сирійське слово «гаммал», замість правильнoго «гамла». Отже, оригінальне значення цього уривку було, «Легше мотузці пройти через вушко в голці, ніж багатому ввійти в Боже Царство.» Ми можемо бачити, що це значення ліпше зберігає метафору, бо нитка пройде через вушко в голці, і мотузка є аналогічним до нитки, але верблюд немає нічого спільного з вушком в голці.  Проте, обидва значення є рівно неможливими, бо незважаючи на дуже велику різницю між мотузкою і верблюдом, вони не пройдуть через природну силу.

When the Gospel of St. Matthew was translated into the Greek language, the translator read the Syriac word “gammal,” instead of the correct word “gamla.” Thus, the original meaning of this passage was, “It is easier for a rope to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God.” We can see that this meaning better preserves the metaphor, since a thread passes through the eye of a needle, and a rope is analogous to a thread, but a camel has nothing in common with the eye of a needle. Nevertheless, both meanings are equally impossible, since, despite the very great difference between a rope and a camel, they both will not pass through by any natural force.

Отже, Господь промовляє, що спасіння багатих майже неможливе. Але, чому Він дає це дуже урочисте попередження? Бо Він знає, що багаті є прихильними до всіх сортів матеріяльних речей, які відвертають їх увагу від Бога та їхньої вічної долі.  Прихильність до матеріяльних речей і світової сили створює залежність від них, і знищує внутрішнє життя, яке нам потрібне, щоб мати спілкування з Богом у цьому житті, яке приготовляє нас до майбутнього життя у Божому Царстві. 

У духовному житті, прихильність до матеріяльних речей є повільно ви́міняною любови до Бога через молитву і роздумування над Святим Письмом.  Коли ми зосереджуємось на духовних речах, матеріяльні речі здаються менш і менш дійсними заради їхніх випадкових і завжди змінених природ. Так, як Господь Ісус каже, людина, яка має довір’я до матеріяльних речей є людиною, яка будує її хату на піску́.  Бо пісок постійно змінюється так, як всі випадки нашого життя у цьому світі.  Подібно, коли ми вибираємо, щоб мати прихильність до матеріяльних речей, духовні речі здаються менш і менш дійсними, аж до поки цей світ стає тільки реальністю.

Therefore, the Lord proclaims that the salvation of the rich is nearly impossible. But why does He give this very solemn warning? He knows that the rich are attached to all sorts of material things, which take their attention away from God and their eternal destiny.  Attachment to material things and worldly power creates dependence on these things, and destroys the interior life, which we need in order to have communion with God in this life, which prepares us for the future life in God’s Kingdom.

In the spiritual life, attachment to material things is slowly exchanged for the love of God through prayer and meditation on Holy Scripture. When we focus on spiritual things, material things seem less and less real on account of their contingent and ever-changing natures.  Just as the Lord Jesus says, the person, who has confidence in material things is like a person, who builds his house on sand, since sand is constantly changing, just like the circumstances of our life in this world.  Similarly, when we choose to become attached to material things, spiritual things seem less and less real, until this world becomes the only reality.

Але часто, ми не думаємо, що ми є багатими, і тому, ми не віримо, що маємо цю проблему.  Проте, багатство є відносним концептом. Наприклад, кожна людина, яка мешкає у цій країні, є між найбагатшими людьми у всьому світі. Ми повинні пізнавати цей факт, і розуміти про духовні турботи і спокуси, які наше багатство дає нам.  Цим розумінням, ми також повинні прагнути до простоти, яку навіть найблагородніші наші предки приймали тому що, вони розуміли, що чеснота і показний прояв багатства були несумісними.  Тимчасовий Папа Римський є дуже великим прикладом цього духа. Коли він стався Папою, він відмовився мешкати у Апостольському Палаці тому що, йому не подобався показний вигляд палацу.  Замість цього, він вирішив мешкати у простому гуртожитку Будинку Святої Марти. 

But often we do not think that we are rich, and therefore, we do not believe that we have this problem. However, wealth is a relative concept. For example, each person, who lives in this country is among the richest people in the whole world. We ought to recognize this fact, and understand the spiritual difficulties and temptations, which our wealth brings to us.  By understanding this, we should also strive for the simplicity, which even the most noble of our ancestors accepted, because they understood that virtue and the ostentatious show of wealth were not compatible.  The current Pope of Rome is a very good example of this spirit.  When he became Pope, he refused to dwell in the Apostolic Palace, because he did not like the ostentation of the palace. Rather, he decided to dwell in the simple dormitory of the Domus Sanctae Martae.

A different idea of wealth

Нам треба постійно змінювати нашу орієнтованість до речей цього світу. Дійсне багатство є небесним багатством. Іншими словами, знання про духовні речі є джерелом нашого дійсного багатства.  Ніщо не може знищити це багатство, що не є складеним, але тотально ціле і єдине.

We need to continuously change our orientation towards the things of this world. True wealth is wealth in Heaven. In other words, knowledge concerning spiritual things is the source of our true wealth. Nothing can destroy this wealth, since it is not made of many parts, but is completely whole and single.
