Today, the gospel reading concerning the feeding of the 5000 men is a good opportunity for us to meditate on the manner in which God feeds us in our daily lives, in our walk through this life to eternal life in the Heavenly Kingdom. First of all, we should be explicit, the Lord will only provide for us if we are on that path, if we are following His commandment, "seek first the Kingdom of God and its righteousness." He promises us that if this is our concern, He will provide us with everything else that is necessary. Thus, when our concern is our journey to the Heavenly Kingdom, we are invited by the Lord to have no anxiety about anything. He tells us in the Sermon on the Mount: "Do not be worried about the food and drink you need in order to stay alive, or about clothes for your body. After all, isn't life worth more than food? And isn't the body worth more than clothes? Look at the birds: they do not plant seeds, gather a harvest and put it in barns; yet your father in Heaven takes care of them! Aren't you worth more than birds? Can any of you live a bit longer by worrying about it? And why worry about clothes? Look how the wild flowers grow: they do not work or make clothes for themselves. But I tell you that not even King Solomon with all his wealth had clothes as beautiful as one of these flowers. It is God Who clothes the wild grass– grass that is here today and gone tomorrow, burned up in the oven. Won't He be all the more sure to clothe you? What little faith you have!"

We see again and again in salvation history that God behaved in just this same way towards those who dedicated themselves to Him in a special way and desired to serve Him with their whole hearts. For example, the holy Prophet Elias, whose feast we celebrated last Thursday was first instructed by God to go live by the banks of a certain brook during a horrible, devastating drought. There God provided for His prophet not only the water of the brook, but He also commanded ravens to bring the prophet loaves of bread every day. When, in the course of time, the brook dried up, God then commanded the prophet to go to Zarephath, where a widow would take care of him. When the prophet arrived in Zarephath, the widow had no more than a cup of flour and a pint of olive oil. Nevertheless, God miraculously extended that cup of flour and that pint of oil, so that it fed the prophet, the widow and her son for the entire three-year period of the drought.

Бог так само піклується про нас, якщо ми маємо довіру до Нього і присвячуємо себе Йому всім нашим серцем. Ми можемо це зробити в будь-якій почесній сфері життя, у будь-якій професії та за будь-яких життєвих обставин. Якщо ми живемо для Божої слави, Бог подбає про те, щоб у нас було достатньо, щоб дістатися до нашої безпечної гавані в Небесному Царстві.

God has the same care for us if we have confidence in Him and dedicate ourselves to Him with our whole hearts. We can do this in any honorable walk of life, in any occupation and in any life circumstances. If we are living for God's glory, God will see to it that we have sufficiency to arrive at our safe haven in the Heavenly Kingdom.

Наша надія на Господа завжди наголошує на достатності. Це так, тому що Бог дасть нам тільки те, що буде добре для нас на шляху спасіння в цьому житті. Зайве нам не піде́. Навпаки, це відволікало б нас від просування до місця призначення. Отже, наша довіра до Бога завжди чітко полягає в тому, що Він забезпечить нас достатністю. Таким чином, день у день у цьому житті ми звикаємо відчувати любов Бога до нас.

The emphasis of our hope in the Lord is always on sufficiency. This is so, because God will give us only what is good for us along the path of salvation in this life. Superfluity would not be good for us. On the contrary, it would serve as a distraction from our progress towards our destination. Therefore, our trust in God is always, explicitly, that He will provide us sufficiency. In this way, from day to day in this life, we become accustomed to experiencing the love of God for us.

Ми знаємо, що Господь часто довіряє одній людині більше, ніж іншій. Серед усіх людей на світі є бідні і багаті. Фактично, якщо ми живемо в цій країні, ми вже серед багатії́в землі. We know that the Lord often entrusts more to one person than He entrusts to another. Among all the people in the world, there are those who are poor and those who are rich. In fact, if we live in this country, we are already among the rich of the earth. At least for the time being, we are blessed by God with relative abundance. Yet, we know that such blessings are for the sake of virtue. It may appear that these things are over and above sufficiency, but, in reality, they are part of the sufficiency that God has given us, because we need to show mercy to those who are less fortunate. God has given us what looks like superfluity, so that we can be generous with others, because generosity towards others is necessary for our salvation. In connection with this great mystery, there are two truths that should be in our attention. One of these truths is gratifying, the other deeply concerning. First, we, the inhabitants of the United States, are among the most generous in the world towards those who are in need. Nevertheless, second, that same generosity is diminishing with each new generation. We both need to practice generosity and teach it to our children.

Отже, водночас, коли Господь Ісус заохочує нас не турбуватися про потреби нашого життя в цьому світі, Він також говорить нам, що ми повинні бути друзями бідних. Це один із основних способів, якими ми слідуємо за Ним і стаємо подібними до Нього. У наших церковних службах ми часто називаємо Господа Ісуса «Чоловіколюбцем». Ми наслідуємо Його велику любов до людей, стаючи друзями бідних.

So, at the same time that the Lord Jesus encourages us to have no anxiety about the needs of our lives in this world, He also tells us that we must be friends of the poor. This is one of the primary ways in which we follow Him and become like Him. In our church services we often use call the Lord Jesus "the Lover of Mankind." We imitate His great love for human beings by becoming friends of the poor.
