In the Gospel reading of this Sunday, the Lord Jesus uses the physical blindness of the beggar to call attention to the far more serious kind of blindness that can take away our inheritance in the Heavenly Kingdom. This fact is made plain at the end of the episode, when our Lord confronts the Pharisees and tells them that their blindness is sinful, because it is willful.

The Lord Jesus is calling us to awareness of spiritual blindness in our lives. This blindness can take away our eternal inheritance in the Kingdom precisely because it is willful. Physical blindness is the inability to perceive things by sight, but spiritual blindness is the unwillingness to perceive the truth. Truth is perceived by the mind through the senses, but, even though our senses may be operating normally, we still have the ability to deny the truth. We can see something happen, and then claim that it did not happen. We hear something said, and then claim that it was not said. We can know something for certain, and then claim we know no so such thing.

The Lord Jesus' enemies were spiritually blind. They were blinded by their own envy and the sense of their own importance. They were blinded by sin in just the same way that Pharaoh was blinded by sin in the time of the Prophet Moses. When we read the account of the plagues that befell Egypt in the Book of Exodus, we might well react: "How could he continue in disbelief when such clear signs were shown him. Over and over again, he seems ready to relent, to admit the greatness of God, and then, he reverses himself and withdraws again into his obstinacy." However, if we reflect, we can think of many people in our own lives who have brought on themselves the corrections and the judgments of God by their own bad choices. We can clearly see what they must do to right their situations, but they themselves have no idea. Most of us have witnessed at least one person destroy himself through sheer obstinacy.

Yet, the truth is: we are the same, perhaps not in epic ways, but in many small ways that still add up to great unfaithfulness to God. The best example of such spiritual blindness and unfaithfulness is unwillingness to face, confront and admit our faults sincerely and honestly. Second to this is our consistent priority to always justify and rationalize our actions. It is a priority for us, because, in our pride, we must always appear in a good light, no matter what. Our personal spiritual lives, as well as the lives of our families and communities would be greatly improved and, in fact, blessed if we could learn to endure the little humiliations that life always requires of us. The only way to achieve this is through the acquisition of spiritual sight. The only way to acquire spiritual sight is through love for Christ, because Christ the True God abased Himself to save all of us. His love for us was even greater than the depth of humiliation that He endured for us. He is the Way, the Truth and the Life and He gives us the gift of true spiritual sight to see ourselves and others as we truly are.

The false gods of the nations are quite different. Which of them ever humbled himself to accept suffering, death and ill-repute out of love for human beings? Certainly not the haughty Allah, the god of the false prophet Mohammed, who commanded one of his servants to murder people for mocking him. One of them, Asma bint Marwan was a mother, and the false prophet's servant cut off her head while two of her children were sleeping in her arms. A great contrast with the True God, Who accepted mockery and insult for our sake and pleaded with His Father for the forgiveness of His tormentors.

Нам потрібен духовний зір, який приходить від повернення сліпих очей нашої душі до Ісуса Христа, Живого Бога, як він сам нам сказав: «Блаженні очі, які бачать те, що ви бачите». We need the spiritual sight that comes from turning the blind eyes of our soul to Jesus Christ, the Living God, as He Himself told us, "Blessed are the eyes that see what you see." If we crush our hearts in repentance and learn to see Him as our model in all things, the practice of the virtues in our lives will become simplified as our nature is renewed and restored.
