Розповідь святого Матея про зцілення Господом Ісусом раба сотника є для нас гарним прикладом сили заступницької молитви. З цієї історії ми дуже чітко бачимо, що ефективність заступництва значною мірою залежить від заступника. Заступник повинен бути сильним у вірі, і також допомагає, якщо заступник перевершує себе смиренням, як ми бачимо у сотника.

St. Matthew’s account of the Lord Jesus’ cure of the centurion’s slave is a good example to us of the power of intercessory prayer. We see very clearly from this story that the effectiveness of intercession depends in great degree upon the intercessor. The intercessor has to be strong in faith, and it helps as well if the intercessor excels in humility, as we see that the centurion does.

First of all, how do we become strong in faith, so that our prayers can be effective for others? The only possible answer to this question is: through familiarity with God. Only through spending time with God in prayer can we have the kind of faith that, according to the dictum of the Lord Jesus, moves mountains. First, we should realize that the goal of our lives as human beings is the Kingdom of God. We recognize that the world that we live in is not permanent, and this realization leads us to lift our gaze to what is higher, to the permanent, to the everlasting, to God Himself, since He created us for Himself. Yet, at the same time, we know that in order to reach our goal, we have to take the right aim. Just as in so many areas of our lives, there are distant and proximate goals. The distant goal, the Heavenly Kingdom, is served by a proximate goal toward which we aim. It is a guide for us, because we know as long as we have our aim on the proximate goal, we are on the right path to arrive at the distant and final goal. This proximate goal is like the needle of a compass. The needle of the compass, nor even the compass itself, is the goal, but it shows the true direction towards the goal. So, what is this proximate goal? It is repentance, aimed at purity of heart.

Як каже нам Сам Господь Ісус, лише чисті серцем побачать Бога. Ми повинні спрямувати свої зусилля на покаяння, щоб очистити свої серця. Ця посередня мета нашого внутрішнього життя передбачає, що наша увага зосереджена на охороні наших сердець, на спостереженні за тим, що туди входить. Без уважної пильності ми можемо бути неуважними до того, що відбувається в наших розумах і серцях, і наші думки стають середовищем нестримних пристрастей (гнів, заздрість, ненависть, нетерпіння, похоті). Усьому цьому дозволено гнити та рости у вологому середовищі необережного розуму. Але з увагою та відданістю молитві, особливо молитві за чистоту серця, ми можемо зробити кроки до очищення, оскільки пристрасті більше не можуть ховатися в нас, а все більше піддаються впливу «сонячного світла» Божественної Благодаті.

As the Lord Jesus Himself tells us, only the pure of heart will see God. We have to aim our efforts at repentance, in order to purify our hearts. This proximate goal of our interior life presumes that our attention is fixed on guarding our hearts, keeping watch over what enters there. Without an attentive watchfulness, we can be oblivious to what is going on in our minds and hearts, and our thoughts become an environment of unrestrained passions (anger, envy, hatred, impatience, lust). All are allowed to fester and grow in the damp environment of an unguarded mind. But with attention and commitment to prayer, especially prayer for purity of heart, we can make strides towards purification, since passions can no longer hide within us, but are more and more exposed to the “sunlight” of Divine Grace.

Ефективне заступництво починається з цього очищення. Чим більше очищені наші серця, тим краще ми сприймаємо волю Божу, яка, у свою чергу, веде нас молитися так, як нам слід. Effective intercession begins with this purification. The more our hearts are purified, the more we perceive the will of God, which, in turn, guides us to pray as we ought. We can have enormous certainty that we would not be able to pray at all without the action of the Holy Spirit within us, and we can be confident that it is this same Holy Spirit Who instructs us how to pray and for what we should pray. In fact, the Holy Apostle Paul testifies that we don’t really pray at all, but it is the Holy Spirit that prays in and through us.

So, first, we should always pray first for purity of heart, and then ask for the help of the Holy Spirit to aid us to pray as we ought. Then, second, we should always keep a list of our intentions and update the list often. Keeping the list is itself an act of faith in the power of God and in the effectiveness of intercessory prayer. In fact, in certain cases, when we are very tired or perhaps pressed for time, placing our hand on the list or placing the list in front of an icon can replace our having to go through the list of intentions one by one in prayer, as long as we are very familiar with our prayer intentions and review them in more detail at other times.
