The key to humility: Remembrance of God

Сьогоднішній визначний урок, який ми отримуємо з євангельського читання, стосується чесноти смирення. Суть смирення, як ми знаємо, полягає в усвідомленні нашого місця в прекрасному порядку, створеному Богом, не занадто піднесеного і не занадто низького, але саме того місця, де Бог створив нас для процвітання. Природно, оскільки наша гріхова природа полягає в тому, щоб підносити себе, ми постійно виявлятимемо необхідність опускатися до того місця, яке Бог призначив для нас. З одного боку, цей безперервний процес самовиправлення може здатися виснажливим і гнітючим, але ми можемо бути впевнені, що це станеться само собою, якщо ми справді шукатимемо Бога.

Today the outstanding lesson that we have from the Gospel reading is about the virtue of humility. The essence of humility, we know, is knowing our place within the beautiful order that God has created, neither too exalted nor too lowly, but that precise place wherein God has created us to flourish. Naturally, because it is our fallen nature to exalt ourselves, we will continuously find that it is necessary to lower ourselves to the place that God intended for us. On the one hand, this continuous process of self-correction might sound exhausting and depressing, but we can be confident that it will happen by itself if we truly seek God.

Як же нам знати, чи справді ми шукаємо Бога? Ключ простий: пам'ять про Бога. Через наше гріхопадіння нам важко пам'ятати про Бога, для Якого ми були спочатку створені. Ми живемо серед метушні, розчарувань, роздратування, сум'яття та гніву, знаходячи багато речей, які не відповідають нашим бажанням. За всіх цих обставин нам слід зупинитися та запитати себе: чи шукаю я Бога, чи шукаю себе (своєї власної слави, своєї досконалості)? Якщо я шукаю Бога, то з якої причини ці обставини мені неприємні?

How, then, do we know if we are truly seeking God? The key is simple: remembrance of God. Because of our fall into sin, it is difficult for us to remember God, for Whom we were originally created. We live our lives amid busyness, frustration, annoyance, turmoil and anger, finding many things that are not according to our desires. In all these circumstances, we should pause to ask ourselves: Am I seeking God, or am I seeking myself (my own glory, my own perfection)? If I am seeking God, then for what reason are these circumstances displeasing to me?

Як і святі апостоли Яків та Іван у сьогоднішньому євангельському читанні, ми повинні прагнути піднесеного місця в Небесному Царстві. Так, це бажання гідне захоплення, якщо воно заради Бога. Якщо з любові до Бога ми хочемо бути поруч з Богом, що в цьому може бути поганого? Хто не хоче бути поруч з тим, кого любить? Ні, той, хто любить, зробить усе необхідне, щоб бути в присутності того, кого любить. Але якщо піднесене місце в Небесному Царстві призначене для нашого власного прославлення, то це не має нічого спільного з Богом. Ми шукаємо себе, а не Бога, Якому ми завдячуємо своїм існуванням. Бог не винагороджує і не благословляє егоїзм, і так само, як і з цим найбільшим бажанням, так само і з усіма іншими шляхами, проектами та досягненнями нашого життя загалом. Так само, як святі апостоли Яків та Іван, коли ми забуваємо про Бога, ми звертаємося до руйнівних порівнянь та змагань з іншими, бо шукаємо лише себе, власної досконалості, а не слави Божої.

Like the Holy Apostles James and John in the Gospel reading today, we should desire an exalted place in the Heavenly Kingdom. Yes, the desire is admirable if it is for God’s sake. If for love of God we want to be near God, what could possibly be wrong with that? Who doesn’t want to be near the one he loves? No, one who loves will do whatever is necessary to be in the presence of the one he loves. But if the exalted place in the Heavenly Kingdom is for our own aggrandizement, then it has nothing to do with God. We are seeking ourselves not the God to Whom we owe our being. God does not reward or bless self-seeking, and just as it is with this greatest of desires, so too is it the same with all the other pathways, projects and accomplishments of our life generally. Just like the Holy Apostles James and John, when we forget God, we turn to destructive comparisons and contests with others, because we are seeking only ourselves, our own perfection, rather than the glory of God.

Так, ключем до чесноти смирення, ключем до пізнання прекрасного місця, яке ми маємо у створеному Богом порядку, є пам'ять про Бога. Немає святості без цієї пам'яті. Як часто ми повинні пам'ятати про Бога? Завжди найкраще, але, загалом, чим більше ми пам'ятаємо про Бога в різних обставинах нашого життя, тим здоровішими ми будемо в духовному сенсі; тим спокійнішими ми будемо в психологічному сенсі. Спокій, який здається безглуздим в очах світу, є відмінною рисою тих, хто шукає Бога (а не себе) завдяки своїй впевненості в Богові, Чия воля керує всім і Який змушує все працювати разом на благо тих, хто любить Його.

Yes, the key to the virtue of humility, the key to knowing the beautiful position that we have in God’s created order is remembrance of God. There is no holiness without this remembrance. How often must we remember God? Always is best, but, generally, the more we remember God in the various circumstances of our lives, the healthier we will be in a spiritual sense; the more at peace we will be in a psychological sense. A calmness that appears nonsensical in the sight of the world is the hallmark of those who seek God (and not themselves) due to their confidence in God, Whose will governs all things and Who makes all things work together for the good of those who love Him.
