Генеалогія Господа Ісуса, яку ми знаходимо в сьогоднішньому читанні Євангелія, взята з Євангелія від Матeя, нагадує багато-багато родоводів, записаних у Святому Письмі. Практично кожна важлива особа в історії спасіння представлена в Біблії за допомогою генеалогії. Наявність родоводів є постійним нагадуванням нам про те, що наша віра є історичною вірою. Людська історія — це безперервна історія стосунків Бога з людьми, яка має початок, середину та кінець. Серед цих генеалогій, родовід Господа нашого Ісуса Христа особливо нагадує нам про те, що спасіння – це історія. Бог міг би завершити Свою роботу споку́тування відразу, в одну мить, але замість цього Він вирішив спасти й освятити Свій народ з часом, відкриваючи Свою славу різними способами в наступних поколіннях. Чому Він зробив такий вибір? Біблія підказує нам, що Він зробив це як пристосування до людського розуму. Цар Давид говорить у Псалмах: «Я роздумую над діяннями Твоїми від давнини, роздумую над діяннями рук Твоїх і простягаю до Тебе руки свої. Наповнена душа моя, немов бенкет, уста мої славлять Тебе з радістю». Іншими словами, людина — це істота, яка міркує, яка намагається щось зрозуміти і, власне, отримує від цього величезне задоволення. Інші інтелектуальні створіння у Всесвіті, ангели, не роблять цього. Їм це не потрібно, тому що Бог дав їм глибокі знання про все створене.

The genealogy of the Lord Jesus that we find in today's gospel reading, taken from the Gospel According to Saint Matthew is reminiscent of many, many genealogies that are recorded in the Scriptures. Virtually every important figure in the history of salvation is introduced in the Bible by means of a genealogy. The presence of the genealogies is a constant reminder to us that our faith is an historical faith. Human history is the continuous story of God's relationship with human beings, and it has a beginning, a middle and an end. Among these genealogies, the genealogy of Our Lord Jesus Christ is especially a reminder to us that salvation is a story. God could have accomplished His work of redemption all at once, in one single moment, but He chose instead to save and sanctify His people over time, revealing His glory in various ways in the successive generations. Why did He make this choice? The Bible suggests to us that He did this as an accommodation to the human mind. King David says in the Psalms, "I ponder Your deeds from of old, I muse on what Your hands have wrought and to You I stretch out my hands. My soul is filled as with a banquet, my mouth praises You with joy." In other words, the human being is a creature that ponders, that tries to figure things out and, actually, takes great delight in doing so. The other intellectual creatures in the universe, the angels, don't do this. They don't need to, because God has given them an infused knowledge of everything in creation.

Люди — істоти, що розмірковують. Найкращим прикладом цього у фізичному світі є розвиток сучасної науки. Наука починається і закінчується запитаннями. Так само в духовному світі наші стосунки з Богом починаються і продовжують розвиватися через запитання. Це щастя для всіх нас, членів Божого народу, що другий цар Ізраїлю страждав від надзвичайного безсоння. Це безсоння принесло царю Давидові великі страждання, але Бог сказав йому: «Подумай на своєму ложі й замо́вкни». Сам Давид навчився використовувати безсоння, щоб поглибити свої стосунки з Богом. В іншому місці він каже до Бога: «Про Тебе я міркую всю ніч, бо Ти був мені помічником». У подібному коментарі про ці безсонні години він каже: «Я розмірковував, і мій дух сумнівався».

Human beings are pondering creatures. The best example of this in the physical world is the development of modern science. Science begins and ends with questions. Similarly, in the spiritual world, our relationship with God begins and continues to grow through questions. It is fortunate for all of us, members of God's people, that Israel's second king suffered from extreme insomnia. This insomnia gave King David great suffering, but God told him, "Ponder on your bed and be still." David himself learned to use his sleeplessness to deepen his relationship with God. In another place, he says to God, "On You I muse through the night, for You have been my help." In a similar comment about these sleepless hours, he says, "I pondered and my spirit questioned."

Бог хоче, щоб ми розмірковували над Його діяннями як у фізичному світі, так і в історії. Він створив нас для цього. Це наша особлива здатність, заради якої Він дав нам здатність пам’яті, щоб ми могли зберігати речі для роздумів на Його славу та покращення нашого життя. Усі люди мають цю здатність, але здається, що одні краще за інших. Певні культури краще, ніж інші, уміють роздумувати про роботу Бога у фізичному світі чи в історії. Здається, наприклад, що американці дуже добре володіють першим, але не дуже добре з другим. Наука процвітала в американському середовищі, але в той же час американці славляться тим, що майже не мають почуття історії. Нещодавно деякі американські медіа та політичні діячі́ бездушно припустили, що Україна має обміняти територію на мир, не беручи до уваги той факт, що існує шістсот років історії, які доводять, що це колосально погана ідея. З іншого боку, греки пам’ятають пограбування Константинополя в 1204 році так, ніби це було вчора, і часто розмірковують про це так, ніби це була особиста травма.

God wants us to ponder His works, both in the physical world and in history. He has designed us for this. It is our special ability for which He has given us the faculty of memory, so that we can store up things to reflect upon to His glory and the improvement of our lives. All people have this ability, but it seems that some are better than others. Certain cultures are better than others at reflecting on God's work in the physical world or in history. It seems, for example, that Americans are very good at the former, but not so good at the latter. Science has flourished in the American milieu, but, at the same time, Americans are famous for having almost no sense of history. Recently, some American media and political figures callously suggested that Ukraine should trade territory for peace with no consideration of the fact that there are six hundred years of history that prove that that is a colossally bad idea. Greeks, on the other hand, remember the sack of Constantinople in 1204 as if it were yesterday and frequently ponder it as if it were a personal injury.

Бог хоче, щоб ми розмірковували над тим, що Він зробив для Його слави та покращення нашого життя. Зрозуміло, що для цього ми повинні знати, що зробив Бог. Церква завжди наполягає на тому, щоб ми читали Біблію з цією конкретною метою. Ми повинні це читати і розмірковувати, намагатися зрозуміти все більше і більше. Ми робимо це тому, що таким чином ми дізнаємось і засво́юємо те, що Бог зробив у минулому. Крім того, ми дізнаємося, що Бог робить у нашому житті зараз. Подібно до того, як ми розмірковуємо над словами Біблії, нам призначено розмірковувати про своє власне життя в термінах Біблії. Просто, наприклад, коли ми читаємо історію страждань Божого народу в Біблії, ми дізнаємося, що наші власні страждання не є безглуздими, але важливими, справді дорогоцінними. Адже ми є народом Божим так само, як і наші предки.

God wants us to ponder what He has done for His glory and the improvement of our lives. It stands to reason that in order to do this we have to know what God has done. The Church always insists that we read the Bible for this specific purpose. We must read it and ponder it, try to understand it more and more. We do this because, in this way, we learn and assimilate what God has done in the past. Also, we learn what God is doing in our lives in the present. Just as we ponder the words of the Bible, we are meant to ponder our own lives in the terms of the Bible. Just for example, when we read the story of the sufferings of God's people in the Bible, we learn that our own sufferings are not pointless, but worthwhile, indeed precious. After all, we are God's people just as much as our ancestors were.

Пресвята Богородиця і Приснодіва Марія є ідеальним зразком для практики роздумів над Божими справами. Святий апостол і євангелист Лука докладає зусиль, щоб у двох окремих випадках сказати нам, що Мати Божа постійно роздумувала над своїми переживаннями, «все це зберігала, розмірковуючи в серці Своїм». Ми можемо бути впевнені, що вона постійно розмірковувала про своє життя в термінах Біблії, своєї історії, історії свого народу. Нам потрібно робити те саме, впевнені, що, якщо докладе́мо зусиль, Святий Дух приведе нас до всієї правди. Нам не потрібно багато читати, але достатньо, щоб мати над чим поміркува́ти під час ти́хого часу, але в ідеалі також протягом дня.

Our Most Holy Lady, the Mother of God and ever-virgin Mary is a perfect model for the practice of meditating on God's works. The Holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke goes out of his way to tell us on two separate occasions that the Mother of God's continuous habit was to ponder her experiences, "she kept all these things, pondering on them in her heart." We can be sure that she was constantly meditating on her life in the terms of the Bible, her history, the history of her people. We need to do the same, confident that, if we exert the effort, the Holy Spirit will lead us into all truth. We don't have to read a lot, but just enough to have something to reflect upon during our quiet time, but ideally also throughout the day.
