When Evdokia profaned the holy icon, she fell down blind and mute. This happened, because she was not reflective, prayerful, but vain and talkative. She was self-absorbed-- in other words, she was blind and mute, of little use for her own salvation or for others. Selfishness not only is an obstacle to our own sanctification. It is also an obstacle to the salvation of others. The virtue of charity is the true nature of the universe, the way it was created to be. Charity is superior to all the virtues (CCC 1826) and animates the practice of all the virtues (1827).
What happened to Evdokia served to make plain and visible the disposition that was interior, so that she could be healed.
