Божа дія в нашому житті: співчутлива та любляча, що робить нас святими God’s Action in Our Lives: Compassionate and Loving, Making Us Saints

Сьогоднішнє євангельське читання присвячене ціні учнівства. Господь попереджає Своїх учнів, а також усіх Своїх майбутніх учнів, що Він — вимогливий Учитель. Ціна за наслідування Його буде справді дуже великою, але винагорода за цю відданість буде безкінечною, бо щедрість Бога не можна порівняти ні з чим іншим. Життя святих, звичайно, підтверджує це. Святі живуть життям великого самозречення та самодисципліни, і їхні великі жертви та страждання ведуть їх до слави, бо завдяки цим жертвам і стражданням вони уподібнюються жертві та стражданням Ісуса Христа, Учителя. Їхній світогляд такий, що страждання мають глибокий сенс: вони роблять їх подібними до Христа; через участь у стражданнях Христа вони обожнюються через спілкування з Ним. Today’s Gospel reading is about the cost of discipleship. The Lord is warning His disciples, as well as all His would-be disciples, that He is an exacting Master. The cost for following Him will be very great indeed, but the rewards of that commitment will be infinite, because God’s generosity cannot be compared to any other. The lives of the saints, of course, bear this out. The saints live lives of great self-denial and self-discipline, and their great sacrifices and sufferings lead them to glory, because by means of those sacrifices and sufferings they are conformed to the sacrifice and sufferings of Jesus Christ, the Master. Their worldview is one in which suffering has profound meaning: it makes them like Christ; by means of their sharing in the sufferings of Christ, they are deified through communion with Him. Those same sufferings are acts of love that, in some small way, recompense God for His immense love for them.

Щоб жити таким чином, нам потрібно завжди пам’ятати про кілька речей. По-перше, нам потрібно завжди пам’ятати, що все, що ми переживаємо в нашому житті, є або позитивною, або поблажливою волею Бога. Бог не такий, як ми. Він не просто допускає те, чого не може запобігти. Ні, Він міг би запобігти чому завгодно, але зі Своїх власних люблячих, співчутливих і часто таємничих причин Він допускає певні страждання, які спіткають нас. Усі обставини, всі сили, все в нашому житті є Його слугами. Таким чином, ми можемо не завжди розуміти, що Він робить у нашому житті, але ми повинні мати довіру до Нього та щиро дякувати Йому за все, бо, як каже святий апостол Павло, «Він усе чинить на добре тим, хто любить Його».

In order to live in this manner ourselves, we need to keep a couple of things always in mind. First, we need to always remember that everything that we experience in our lives is either positively or permissively willed by God. God is not like us. He does not merely permit things that He cannot prevent. No, He could prevent anything, but for His own loving, compassionate and often mysterious reasons, he permits certain sufferings to befall us. All circumstances, all forces, all things in our lives are His servants. Thus, we may not always understand what He is doing in our lives, but we should have confidence in Him and sincerely thank Him for everything, because, as the Holy Apostle Paul puts it, “He makes all things work together unto good for those who love Him.”

Друге, що нам потрібно пам’ятати, це те, що навіть демони є Його слугами. Іноді ми підозрюємо, що ми самі, члени нашої родини чи громади є жертвами демонічних атак, і це викликає в нас страх. У такі моменти корисно нагадати собі, що демони, навіть сам Сатана, також є лише слугами. Вони можуть робити лише те, що їм дозволено, і Бог завжди бажає нам добра, дозволяючи їм виконувати їхні дії. Бог допускає спокусу, наприклад, лише до тієї міри, до якої вона може бути для нашого блага (зміцнюючи нас у чесноті, впевненості та любові до Бога). Демони – це лише слуги, але вони завжди є слугами мимоволі. Вони ненавидять те, що повинні служити Богові, Якого вони ненавидять.

The second thing we need to keep in mind is that even the demons are His servants. Sometimes, we suspect that we ourselves or our family members or communities are victims of demonic attacks and this causes us to fear. At times like this, it is useful to remind ourselves that the demons too, even Satan himself, are merely servants. They can only do what they are permitted to do, and God always intends our good by permitting them to perform their actions. God only permits temptation, for example, to the point that it can be for our good (strengthening us in virtue, confidence and love of God). The demons are merely servants, but they are always unwilling servants. They hate the fact that they have to serve God, Whom they hate.

Щоб ми могли жити як святі, ми повинні жити в люблячому прийнятті того, що Бог дає нам, з довірою та впевненістю в тому, що Його мудрість нескінченно більша за нашу. Коли ми реагуємо на обставини в нашому житті з роздратуванням, розчаруванням, образою, сумом чи навіть відчаєм, ми дозволяємо собі поводитися як демони. Ми є мимовільними слугами.

For us to live like the saints, we must live in loving acceptance of what God gives to us, with trusting confidence that His wisdom is infinitely greater than ours. When we respond to circumstances in our lives with annoyance, frustration, resentment, sadness or even despair, we are allowing ourselves to behave like the demons. We are being unwilling servants.
