Коли один дуже щедрий парафіянин, понад десять років тому, подарував нам ст́атую Богоматері Фатімської, яка стоїть у притворі, Я помітив, що фігура статуї містила трьох білих голубів біля її ніг статуї. Спочатку присутність цих голубів мене дещо дратувала, бо з самого початку вони здавались випадковістю, яка мала статися. Я міг легко зрозуміти, що цих голубів можна пошкодити або повністю зламати. Пізніший досвід довів мою правоту. Голуби кілька разів пошкоджувалися та ремонтувалися, але завдяки дуже вмілим майстр́ам у нашій громаді статуя все ще гарна, і пошкодження непомітні. Голуби були для мене ще одним джерелом роздратування, бо я був досить добре знайомий з історією чудесного явлення Пресвятої Богородиці у Фатімі, і я знав, що голуби не фігур́ують у цій історії.

When a very generous parishioner, now more than a decade ago, gave us our statue of Our Lady of Fatima, which stands in the narthex, I noticed that its design contained the figures of three white doves at the statue’s feet. Initially, the presence of these doves was the source of some annoyance for me, because, right from the beginning, they seemed to be an accident waiting to happen. I could see that, very easily, these doves could be damaged or broken off completely. Later experience proved me right. The doves were damaged and repaired several times, but thanks to very able craftsmen among our community, the statue is still beautiful and the damage is not noticeable. The doves were a further source of annoyance for me, because I was fairly familiar with the story of the miraculous appearance of the Most Holy Mother of God at Fatima, and I knew that doves did not figure into the story.

Дві гол́убки одразу полетіли, але решта три полетіли прямо до образу Божої Матері, приземлившись біля її ніг. Незважаючи на зусилля догл́ядачів статуї, голуби вперто відмовлялися летіти. Фактично, голуби залишалися біля ніг статуї протягом усього її тижневого перебування в Лісабоні, протягом церемоній у соборі та перенесення статуї до різних церков столиці. Голуби Бомбарала не покид́али статую, доки вона не повернулася на своє місце у святилищі у Фатімі. Протягом цього часу голуби не їли, не пили, не спали і не залишали своїх відходів біля основи статуї, як поб́оювалися доглядачі. Only recently, I learned that I was wrong. These are, in fact, the doves of Bombaral. Their presence commemorates an astounding miracle that took place in 1946, a miracle that continues to have consequences and repercussions even to this day. In December of 1946, the miraculous image of the Most Holy Mother of God was carried in procession from Fatima to the cathedral in Lisbon, a distance of about ninety miles, so that the image could be crowned as “Queen of Portugal.” Near the beginning of the ninety-mile journey, the procession had to pass through the village of Bombaral. At one point in the statue’s official reception in the village, two girls walked out in front of the statue with a wooden box and released five white doves. Two of the doves immediately flew away, but the remaining three flew directly to the Mother of God’s image, landing at its feet. Despite efforts by the statue’s caretakers, the doves steadfastly refused to leave. In fact, the doves remained at the feet of the statue throughout its week-long stay in Lisbon, throughout the ceremonies at the cathedral and the transfer of the statue to various churches in the capital. The doves of Bombaral did not leave the statue until its return to its place in the shrine at Fatima. During this time, the doves did not eat or drink, nor sleep, nor did they leave their waste on the base of statue, as the caretakers had feared. After their week with the statue, they flew away, completely unharmed by their prolonged abstinence.

У попередньому році світ з жахом спостерігав, як десятки тисяч людей миттєво гинули від вибухів ́атомних бомб у Хіросімі та Нагасакі. У відповідь на безпрецедентну, винайдену людиною ефективність смерті та руйнування, Бог Небесний дав світові живий знак Життя, яке Він хоче дати кожному з нас. Той самий Бог, Який у Нагірній проповіді сказав нам вчитися у «птахів небесних», вирішив показати нам проблиск Свого Царства через птахів небесних. У проповіді Він сказав нам: «Подивіться на птахів: вони не сіють насіння, не збирають урожай і не складають його в комори, а ваш Небесний Отець піклується про них. Хіба ви не набагато цінніші за птахів?» У голубах Бомбарала Бог показав нам життя Воскресіння, життя настільки сильне та непереможне, що його єдина потреба — це Сам Бог. У Воскресінні нам не буде потрібно ні їжі, ні пиття, ні сну, ні чогось іншого. Сам Бог досконало задовольнить усі наші потреби, бо Він є Джерелом усього життя та буття. Тому ми можемо бути впевнені, що Він забезпечить нас усім необхідним, поки ми ще подорожуємо цим світом. За будь-яких обставин нашого життя ми не повинні боятися сказати: «Хай буде воля Твоя». З вірою та лагідністю ми знаємо, що Бог використовує навіть болісні та нещасні речі для добрих ц́ілей, які приносять нам користь і роблять нас досконалішими.

In the previous year, the world had looked on with horror as tens of thousands of human beings were instantly killed by the explosion of the atomic bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In reply to the unprecedented man-invented efficiency of death and destruction, the God of Heaven gave the world a living sign of the Life He wants to give each one of us. The same God, Who told us in the Sermon on the Mount to learn from “the birds of the air,” decided to show us a glimpse of His Kingdom through birds of the air. In the Sermon, He told us, “Look at the birds, they do not plant seeds, gather a harvest and put it in barns, yet your Father in Heaven takes care of them. Aren’t you worth much more than birds?” In the doves of Bombaral, God showed us the life of the Resurrection, a life so strong and invincible that its only necessity is God Himself. In the Resurrection, we will have no need for food or drink or sleep or anything else. God Himself will perfectly satisfy all our needs, for He is the Source of all life and being. Therefore, we can be confident that He will provide everything necessary while we still journey in this world.  In all the circumstances of our lives, we should have no fear in saying, “Thy will be done.” In faith and meekness, we know that God uses even painful and unfortunate things for good purposes that benefit us and make us more perfect.
