Євангельське читання, призначене на сьогодні, нагадує нам, що місія Господа — це всебічне зцілення від універсальних недуг людства — пристрастей. Через Своє служіння серед нас у втіленні Він перемагає владу, яку пристрасті мають над нами, та владу демонічних господарів. Якщо ми співпрацюємо в Його справі, то Його перемога застосовується до нас особисто. Ми приходимо до участі в Його сутності як Сина Божого через Хрещення та стаємо учасниками Його Божественної природи через благодать.

The gospel reading appointed for today reminds us that the Lord’s mission is a comprehensive cure for the universal ailments of mankind, the passions. Through His work among us in the incarnation, He vanquishes the power that the passions have over us and demonic masters. If we cooperate in His work, then His victory is applied to us personally. We come to share His identity as Son of God through Baptism and we become sharers of His Divine Nature through grace.

На початку євангельського читання Господь Ісус щойно зійшов з гори Преображення. Зі землі прекрасного видіння Своєї Божественної природи Він спускається назад у долину цього світу, де все ще панують демони. Негайно Він стикається з великим натовпом, втягнутим у суперечку. За Його відсутності учнів Ісуса попросили вигнати демона, але вони не змогли. Давайте звернемо увагу на деталі, які нам розповідає історія, а потім прочитаємо її відповідно до морального сенсу. Перш за все, ми бачимо, що спочатку Господь Ісус засмучений повідомленням про те, що Його учні не змогли вигнати демона. Він називає натовп і учнів «родом невірним і розбещеним». Чому Він це каже? At the beginning of the gospel reading, the Lord Jesus has just come down from the mount of the Transfiguration. From the land of the beautiful vision of His Divine Nature, He descends back down into the valley of this world, where demons still hold sway. Immediately, he is confronted by a large crowd embroiled in a controversy. In His absence, the disciples of Jesus were asked to cast out a demon, but they could not. Let us give careful heed to the details which the story gives to us and then read according to the moral sense. First of all, we observe that initially the Lord Jesus is upset by the report that His disciples were unable to cast out the demon. He calls the crowd and the disciples a “faithless and perverse generation.” Why does He say this? Because it is their lack of faith, which prevents the demon’s expulsion. Think for a moment about the story of last week’s gospel reading. The Holy Apostle Peter was walking on the sea, but his lack of faith made him sink. This kind of episode is a commonplace in the gospel accounts. The Lord Jesus goes to His own town, where He grew up, intending to share with them the good news of salvation. Nevertheless, their lack of faith makes His whole visit fruitless. He leaves there without having performed any of the astounding miracles that His ministry is known for in the surrounding towns, because the people of Nazareth just don’t believe.

Отже, чому віра має бути такою критично важливою? Зрештою, хіба не було б так, що якби Господь здійснив якесь велике знамення, люди миттєво були б прихилені до Його вчення? На жаль, це неправда. Ми можемо це чітко бачити. Книжники та фарисеї були свідками всіх чудес Господа та чули все Його вчення. І все ж, побачивши все, що вони бачили, який їхній вердикт? Яке судження вони виносять щодо Господнього служіння? Вони кажуть: «Він робить усе це силою Вельзевула, князя демонів». Незважаючи на вражаючі знамення, які вони бачили, вони залишаються впертими у своїй невірі.

So, why should faith be so critical? After all, wouldn’t it be the case that, if the Lord performed some great sign, the people would instantly be won over to His teaching? Sadly, this is not true. We can see this clearly. The scribes and the Pharisees were witnesses to all the Lord’s miracles and heard all His teaching. And yet, having seen all that they had seen, what is their verdict? What judgment do they pass on the Lord’s ministry? They say, “He is doing all this through the power of Beelzebul, the Prince of Demons.” Despite the astounding signs that they have seen, they remain obstinate in their lack of faith.

Віра так само важлива для всіх нас. Бог хоче, щоб Його любили вільно, бо Він створив нас вільними, і Він радіє, що ми вільно обираємо Його. Він не буде примушувати чи перемагати нашу свободу, бо це було б несумісним з любов’ю. Він закликає нас наслідувати Його люблячу природу, відповідати на Його любов такою ж любов’ю до Нього та наших ближніх.

Faith is just as critical for all of us. God wants to be loved freely, because He made us to be free and He delights in us freely choosing Him. He will not compel or overpower our freedom, because that would be inconsistent with love. He calls us to imitate His loving nature, to respond to His love with the same love for Him and our neighbors.  

Отже, чому наше життя ставить так багато перешкод між нами та нашою вічною долею? Через брак віри. І чому ми слабкі у вірі? Тому що ми не люди молитви. Ми впадаємо у відчай і здаємося. Ми не наполегливі. Те саме стосується і наших інших стосунків. У важкі часи справжні друзі наполегливо прагнуть бути друзями. З іншого боку, ми, безвірні, здаємося і віддаляємося. Озирніться навколо; подивіться, наскільки поширені розлучення у цьому світі, в якому ми живемо, незважаючи на те, що вони непоправно шкодять дітям, які в них беруть участь. Так багато разів я чув свідчення подружжя після їхнього розлучення: «Я був нещасливий». Стосунки з Богом – це справжні стосунки; іноді вони роблять нас нещасними. Бог показує якість нашої відданості через труднощі. Справжні друзі Бога наполегливі. Ми, безвірні, здаємося і віддаляємося. У цьому сенсі ми бачимо, що наше християнське життя дещо циклічне: щоб бути вірними, ми повинні бути людьми молитви, але щоб наполегливо молитися, ми повинні мати віру.

So, why does our life present so many obstacles between us and our eternal destiny? Because of our lack of faith. And why are we weak in faith? Because we are not people of prayer. We get discouraged and give up. We don’t persevere. It is the same with our other relationships. In times of difficulty, true friends persevere in their determination to be friends. On the other hand, we, the faithless, give up and drift away. Look around; see how common divorce is in this world in which we live, despite the fact that it irreparably harms the children who are involved. So many times, I have heard the testimony of spouses after their divorce: “I was unhappy.” The relationship with God is a real relationship; sometimes it makes us unhappy. God shows forth the quality of our commitment through difficulties. The true friends of God persevere. We, the faithless, give up and drift away. In this sense, we see that our Christian life is a bit circular: to be faithful, we have to be people of prayer, but to persevere in prayer, we must have faith.

Брати і сестри, рішення полягає в тому, щоб молитися за віру та наполегливо молитися. Виділяйте для себе один і той самий час щодня для молитви та виконуйте всі свої молитовні практики, незалежно від того, що ви відчуваєте. Поглиблюймо наші стосунки з Богом, і наша віра також поглибиться.

Brothers and sisters, the solution is to pray for faith and to persevere in prayer. Set aside for yourselves the same time every day for prayer and fulfill the totality of your prayer-practices no matter how you feel. Let us deepen our relationship with God and our faith will deepen as well.
