Дивовижний збіг євангельського читання на сьогодні зі святим, якого ми згадуємо. Сьогодні – день пам’яті священномученика Кипріяна та його співстрадниці Юстини. Згідно з розповіддю про їхнє життя, святий Кипріян був могутнім чаклуном, поклонником бісів, який зрештою був навернений до християнської віри за прикладом святої Юстини. Кипріян був найнятий заможною людиною в місті Антіохії, щоб заклинати Юстину, щоб вона закохалася в цього чоловіка. There is a wonderful coincidence between the gospel reading for today and the saint whom we commemorate. Today is the feast day of the Holy Hieromartyr Cyprian and his fellow sufferer, Justina. According to the account of their lives, Saint Cyprian was a powerful sorcerer, a worshipper of demons, who was ultimately converted to the Christian faith by the example of Saint Justina. Cyprian had been hired by a wealthy man in the city of Antioch to cast spells upon Justina, in order to make her fall in love with the man. Justina, however, was a Christian, who had made a vow of virginity and spent her time in prayer and fasting. As a result, the magical efforts of Cyprian were to no avail. All his spells were useless against Justina. Ultimately, Cyprian understood that he was dealing with a power greater than himself and greater than the demons he served. He gave up the practice of sorcery and became a Christian. Eventually, he was chosen to be the bishop of his city. He and Justina both gave their lives for the Christian faith during the persecution of the Emperor Diocletian.

This coincidence in the themes of the gospel reading and the saints of the day is a good opportunity for us to meditate on the utter foolishness of human beings, who have often made alliances with malicious, preternatural beings, who hate mankind, in order to get revenge on other human beings. The demons only desire our destruction, and yet we are so foolish that we have often gone to them seeking some sort of benefit.

Те саме, що стосується чаклунства та темних мистецтв, є істинним і в повсякденному житті. Будь-який союз, який ми укладаємо зі злом, навіть найменшим, зрештою призведе лише до зла. Ненавидь демонів до нас не пом’якшує той факт, що ми прагнемо їхньої дружби. Навпаки, ця огида тільки посилюється, тому що демони дуже добре знають величезні блага, які Бог пропонує людям. The same thing that is true in the case of sorcery and the dark arts is the true also in everyday life. Any alliance that we make with evil, even in the smallest way, will ultimately only lead to evil. The demons loathing of us is not mitigated by the fact that we seek their friendship. On the contrary, that loathing is only increased, because the demons know very well the tremendous benefits that God has offered to human beings. The demons, even though they hate God, they hate human beings all the more because of human disdain for the grace and blessings that God offers.

Людські істоти, які об’єднуються з демонами, для них не що інше, як корисні ідіоти, дурні, які співпрацюють із власним знищенням. З самого початку альянс спрямований демонами на знищення як того, хто звертається до них за допомогою, так і тих, з ким він або вона ворогує. Сказати, що демонам не можна довіряти виконання своєї сторони будь-якої угоди, — це найбільше недомовлення в історії. Human beings that ally themselves with demons are nothing more to them than useful idiots, fools that cooperate with their own destruction. From the very beginning, the alliance is aimed by the demons at the destruction of both the one who seeks their help and those with whom he or she is at enmity. To say that the demons cannot be trusted to fulfill their side of any agreement is history's greatest understatement. Further, for human beings to think that they can outdo their demonic adversaries in cunning is an even greater mistake than trusting them. All human beings are by order of comparison many, many times less intelligent than they are, and the demons look with scorn upon the crude way that we must acquire knowledge by means of the senses. We must always keep in mind that no matter how strong and great the enmity may be between us and other human beings, the hatred, which the demons have for us is immeasurably greater. 

Я звертаюся, зокрема, до наших чоловіків. Особливо ми, чоловіки, повинні прийняти рішення наслідувати Господа Ісуса, як Він з’являється в цьому сьогоднішньому євангельському читанні. Це наше божественно призначене покликання бути захисниками жінок і дітей. Чоловіки повинні діяти, щоб захистити жінок і дітей від природи і злих людей, але ще більшим є наше завдання захистити від дій демонів, так само як ми бачимо, як Господь Ісус рятує вдову та її дочку від демонічного впливу.

I address myself particularly, at this point, to our men. It is especially us men, who must resolve to emulate the Lord Jesus as He appears in this gospel reading today. It is our divinely-appointed vocation to be the protectors of women and children. Men must take action to protect women and children from nature and evil people, but it is even more our task to protect against the actions of demons, just as we see the Lord Jesus save the widow and her daughter from demonic influence.

Ми навіть не можемо сподіватися виконати свою роль захисників від цих найнебезпечніших ворогів, якщо не будемо людьми, відданими молитві, тому що сила для цього захисту походить лише від Бога. We cannot even hope to fulfill our role as protectors against these most dangerous enemies if we are not people committed to prayer, because the strength for this defense comes only from God. The man who is watchful over his own thoughts and prays to God in his heart is a trustworthy protector of his family against the actions of the demons. In turn, he is circumspect concerning what he allows and what he forbids among the members of his family, so that they are protected from these grave threats.
