Once again, the episode that is related to us in the Gospel reading today stresses the necessity of faith, in order to know, love and serve God. At the end of this reading, the council members retort to Nicodemus: "Search the Scriptures! There is no prophet who arises from Galilee." This saying displays the issue of the hidden origin of the Messiah. It is clear from the context that the council members are completely unaware that the Lord Jesus has any connection with Bethlehem. Other comments by His enemies in the context of the same Gospel show that they were somewhat aware of the strange circumstances of His birth (without knowing the place of his birth), since on some occasions they attack Him in a way that suggests that His birth was illegitimate.

We learn from all this that the origins of the Messiah are hidden from the eyes of some, while being revealed to others. The Lord Jesus has freely revealed Himself to those who approach with faith, but He has hidden His origins and significance from those who, through hardness of heart, see Him as a threat to their religious rule. While they steadfastly insist that He cannot be a prophet (because of His purported place of origin and because He's a sinner– breaking the Sabbath, etc.), they have difficulty explaining the astounding signs that are worked by His hands. They explain away the obviously miraculous works by claiming that the Lord Jesus is simply in league with demons, especially the prince of demons, Beelzebub.

Our own world has a similar problem. The world, the culture in which we live, wants to deny categorically the divinity and divine origin of Jesus. The Lord Jesus lives and works among us, but He appears only under the hidden forms of bread and wine. Under these appearances, we bow down and worship Him, but the world sees only the appearances, because it cannot see with the eyes of faith. The admonition of the Lord Jesus to the Pharisees in the Gospel According to Saint John, "Judge not by appearances," is equally appropriate for this world twenty-one centuries later. He further admonishes them that, if they refuse to believe in Him, then at least put faith in the works that they see Him performing. The same admonition could again be directed to our contemporary world. The Savior and Lord of the entire world appears to be only fragments of bread and a chalice of wine, but everywhere there is available to us astounding testimony of the works of this Lord, Who loves mankind. Everywhere He takes up residence in the Church's temples, demonic forces are dispersed and peace is extended. There are dramatic stories of the transformation of entire neighborhoods by the presence of Christ in the Eucharist, enthroned in that neighborhood.

What is true of the Savior Himself under the appearance of bread and wine is also true of the many holy objects that are associated with Him, and which impact our lives every day and many times a day. The holy icons, for example, send abroad a "fragrance", which, although we cannot smell it with our nose, nevertheless, makes the atmosphere more peaceful in the environs in which we live. This is the case, because, once again, the demons are dispersed by the image of the Lord, His Holy Mother and the Saints. Holy books, especially the Bible, have a similar effect upon the atmosphere. This is particularly the case in places where they are read regularly, but we know of cases in which merely the presence of the book has kept the demons at bay. For the same reasons, blessings and sprinklings with holy water also conduce to our peace.

All of these are examples of things which the world is blind to, but are clearly perceived through the eyes of faith. Although they are invisible to the world, nevertheless, the world has no means to explain "the works" which result from them.

Справжня християнська віра занадто довго була невидимою в цій культурі. We have the ability and mission to extend the "works", which make the Kingdom of Heaven present in our life and circumstances. We have faith, but our calling is to make faith visible. True Christian faith has been too invisible for too long in this culture. Now, we must make the glory of the Lord shine forth in our life, so that people of good will can escape the corruption that surrounds us on every side and come to the True Light that illumines every person who comes into the world.

A good place for us to start with a renewed resolution to spread the Light of Christ around us in the world is to eschew the habits of the past year and stop treating other human beings as sources of contagion. We should remind ourselves of that which we have so often professed before: there are many things worse than death. Let us begin anew to reach out to others in warmth and kindness. Let us go out to others and encourage them to return to the house of the Lord, so that they have a chance of being transformed by grace. Physical life without faith is a very empty darkness, but faith, even without physical life, is everlasting life.
