 Сьогодні, в Євангелії ми побачили розповідь святого Луки про чудодійний улов риби, яку святі апостоли Петро та Андрій, разом зі своїми ділови́ми партне́рами, Яковом та Йоаном, досягли завдяки про́яву божественної сили Господа Ісуса. Ми бачимо, що апостоли раніше працювали цілу ніч і нічого не зловили. Однак, як тільки вони приєднались до волі Господа Ісуса щодо них, Господь дарував велике багатство того, що їм було потрібно.

Today in the Gospel, we saw Saint Luke's narration of the miraculous catch of fish, which the Holy Apostles Peter and Andrew, along with their business partners, James and John, attained through the manifestation of the divine power of the Lord Jesus. We see that the apostles had previously labored all night and had caught nothing. Yet, as soon as they aligned themselves with the will of the Lord Jesus for them, the Lord granted a great wealth of what they needed.

Той самий зразок спостерігається протягом усієї історії, яка дана нам у Святому Письмі, а також в історії Церкви, починаючи з часу зіслання Святого Духа на нас у П'ятидесятницю. Час дефіциту та нестачі, здається, завжди збігається із бажанням людей слідувати за власним рішенням, а не Господнім. Тільки звернення до Господа, довіра до Нього та узгодження їхніх бажань з Його бажаннями приносить величезне благословення.

The same pattern is seen throughout all of the history that is given to us in the Scriptures, as well as in the history of the Church, since the time of the descent of the Holy Spirit upon us at Pentecost. A time of scarcity and want seems to always coincide with the people's desire to follow their own decisions and determinations rather than the Lord's. Only turning to the Lord, putting trust in Him and aligning their desires with His desires brings a vast profusion of blessing.

This story is clearly observed in the Book of the Prophet Haggai, for example. The people of Israel, who had returned from exile in Babylon were suffering from all kinds of scarcity, drought and famine. Haggai reveals that the reason was their own decisions. The people as a whole had decided that it was not time to rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem. They would build their own houses first and get fully established in the land before turning to that very complicated project. Their wills were out of alignment with the Lord's holy will. Thus, nature, God's creation, responded to them with scarcity and drought. Their subsequent decision to realign themselves with the desires of their God led to the profusion of everything that was needed.

Отже, чому все це має бути так? Чому Сотворення має реагувати таким чином на відсутність у людини довіри до Творця? Це тому, що Бог є люблячим Богом. Він уклав завіт, вічний завіт з тим, що створив. Це завіт, який тримає все разом. Коли люди живуть у необережності завіту та незнання Бога, саме́ Сотворення руйнується, бо немає нічого, що могло б утримувати його разом. Для того, щоб Сотворення працювало так, як воно повинно діяти знову, завіт потрібно оновити.

So, why should all this be the case? Why should Creation respond in such a way to man's lack of reliance on the Creator? It is because God is a loving God. He has made a covenant, an eternal covenant, with that, which He has created. It is the covenant that holds everything together. When human beings live in heedlessness of the covenant and ignorance of God, Creation itself breaks down, because there is nothing to hold it together. In order for Creation to work the way that it is supposed to work again, the covenant has to be renewed.

Ми знаємо, що Божественна Літургія відновлює завіт між Богом та Його Сотворенням, але ми також знаємо, що це відновлення стосується лише нас, якщо наше серце зміниться через прийняття Христа в Його Таїнах. We know that the Divine Liturgy restores the covenant between God and His creation, but we also know that that restoration is only in relation to us if our hearts are changed through receiving Christ in His Mysteries. If we are incorporated into Christ through repentance and Communion, then we will stand in the renewed covenant.

Саме оновлення завітних стосунків у Христі між Богом та Його Сотворенням відкриває шлях до належного функціонування Сотворення, щоб принести достаток благословень, як матеріальних, так і духовних.

It is the renewal of the covenant relationship in Christ between God and His Creation that opens the way to the Creation's proper functioning to bring forth abundance of blessing, both material and spiritual.

Урок, який ми повинні взяти з сьогоднішнього читання Євангелія, полягає в тому, що Бог незмінно відповідає на молитви покаяння та бажання Його. Ми повинні помі́тити, наскільки прагнуть люди в Євангелії сьогодні бути поруч з Ісусом. Вони натискали на Нього з усіх боків. Йому довелося сісти в човен, щоб пройти якусь відстань між Ним і натовпом. Те са́ме бажання бути поруч із Христом повинно бути і в нас, і це бажання слід оживити покаянням. Завдяки цьому, Сотворення приведено в порядок щодо нас, і достаток Божих благословень і благодаті вивільняється на нас.

The lesson that we should take away from today's Gospel reading is that God invariably answers prayers offered in repentance and desire for Him. We should notice how desirous the people in the Gospel today were to be near Jesus. They pressed on Him from every side. He had to get into a boat, in order to put some distance between Him and the crowd. That same desire to be near Christ should be in us as well, and that desire should be animated by repentance. It is by means of this that Creation is put back into order in respect to us and the abundance of God's blessings and grace are released upon us.

Закінчимо кожен день молитвою покаяння, а кожен новий день почнемо молитвою, що виражає нашу любов до Бога і наше бажання до Нього. Таким чином, ми підтверджуємо свій намір працювати на Царство Небесне.

Let us end each day with a prayer of repentance and begin each new day with a prayer expressing our love for God and our desire for Him. In this way, we solidify our intention to work for the Kingdom of Heaven.
