Чому б Богу не зробити спасіння легким? Why Wouldn't God Make Salvation Easy?

 

Іноді трапляється, що ми знемагаємо через сприйняті труднощі наших духовних завдань. Ми повинні врятувати свою душу і, щоб зробити це, ми повинні боротися проти наших пристрастей і прагнути набли́зитись до Христа. Ця боротьба є співпрацею з Богом, Хто хоче нас врятувати, але пристрасті всередині нас є сильними, і наша прихильність до гріха сильна, і ми повинні відштовхуватися від їхнього впливу, щоб довіритись одному Богу. It is sometimes the case that we become discouraged because of the perceived difficulty of our spiritual tasks. We must save our souls and, to do so, we must struggle against our passions and strive to conform ourselves to Christ. This struggle is one of cooperation with God, Who wants to save us, but the passions within us are powerful and our attachment to sin is strong, and we must push back against their influence so as to put our trust in God alone. The conspiracy against us in our demon-controlled passions always suggests to us that we are going to lose something by engaging in the struggle to begin with. Yet, the truth is actually the opposite. We will gain immeasurably through conformity to Christ, while we will lose everything worth having by staying under the power of the passions and our attachment to sin.

Breaking free is a struggle, and yet why should it be a struggle? Why didn't God make salvation easy? The answer to this question is actually pretty plain. Salvation is love. Real love can't be easy. To confirm this, we need only look at the life of Our Lord Jesus Christ. His life is the pattern for ours. His life was emphatically not easy. It was an atoning sacrifice for sin. Being offered as a sacrifice can't be pleasant.

So, real love of God cannot be easy, any more than real love among human beings can be easy. Both kinds of love require proportional sacrifices on the part of human beings. The sacrifice is in proportion to the other's worthiness to be loved. Every human being is worthy of being loved, because he or she is the image and likeness of God, but certain human beings are more worthy to be loved by us than others because of their proximity to us through special relationships. A man's spouse, for example, is more worthy of love than his neighbor. Only God is infinitely worthy of love. Thus, true love of God requires a sacrifice that is in proportion to God's worthiness. But, Who can offer an infinite sacrifice in proportion to God's infinite worth? Only God can. This is why the Fathers of the Church insist that the Incarnation of the Son of God was always a part of God's plan from the beginning of the world. In the plan of God, the sacrifice of Christ was not always an atonement for sin, but the Incarnation was always the perfect worship of God. It was always the intention of God for the Son of God to become united with human nature and become "the Priest of Creation," offering to God the only sacrifice that can truly give to God the glory and honor that He deserves.

What a tremendous dignity we have as Christians that we are invited to present our every action as a participation in that great sacrifice. We show our love for God by participating in God's love, the Father's love for the Son and the Son's love for the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit. To be apart from this love is to be in the cold place of death.

Real love is not easy, but neither is it a labor that we must undertake alone. Indeed, love of God becomes joy for us, even in all its difficulty, because Christ works in us, as we lean on Christ. We can see this very clearly in our struggles to overcome our sins, vices and passions. In that most important of all endeavors, we will never succeed unless we put all our confidence in Christ. The only way that we succeed is to say to Christ and His Holy Mother, "I know that I am not strong enough to resist temptation, but You can free me by Your strength." In this way, through confidence in God, rather than in ourselves, our struggle becomes pleasing to God.

Thus, throughout the day, we should make acts of confidence in God. We should turn to God in faith in our circumstances from moment to moment. Further, just as we recently talked about forming the habit of blessing others with whom we come into contact, we should also build the habit of blessing God in all things. After all, we can be sure, because of God's goodness, that whatever happens to us is intended for our salvation. Thus, in every circumstance we should bless God as we do in the Liturgy, "Blessed be the Name of the Lord now and forever."

Our salvation cannot be easy, because it is real love and true sacrifice. Nevertheless, the generosity of God cannot be outdone. Whatever we give to Him will come back to us a thousandfold and more. So, let us give everything to Him, Who has given everything to us and for us. To Him be glory in the Church unto ages of ages.
