Де моя буря? Where Is My Storm?

The Gospel reading today is an extraordinary text for meditation because it gives each of us the opportunity to ask, "Where is my storm? What is troubling me in life? How am I guided by the example of Christ to endure in the midst of the storm?"

The first question is the most important, because it leads us to examine ourselves concerning in what ways we need the help and grace of God in our lives. Where is evil? Where is threatening chaos, which seems like it might, in some ways, overpower us? The question itself leads us to a very valuable insight. God permits evil in the world and in our lives in particular to destroy our dependence on ourselves and bring us to rely on God. As is well known from the Psalms, King David was famous and noteworthy among all his contemporaries and all the kings that succeeded him, because of his reliance on God instead of on himself. In fact, when, in his maturity, King David twice decided to rely on his kingly power and his own calculations, his efforts led to the tragedies of the murder of Uriah the Hittite and the plague in Israel that followed David's decision to conduct a census not permitted by the Law of Moses.

In today's Gospel reading, the Apostles are overcome in the boat by a great tempest. The boat is cast about on the waves and the water is even coming over into the boat. In the midst of this crisis, the Lord Jesus appears walking on the sea. The Holy Apostle Peter sees the Lord calmly walking on the sea, despite the storm, and Saint Peter thinks to himself, "I would like to be like that. I want to be able to handle the crises of my life with calmness and peace." For this reason, he says to the Lord, "Command that I come to You on the water." Relying on the strength of the Lord, he gets out of the boat and walks on the sea, just as the Lord is doing. But, when he sees the great waves and the high wind, he becomes afraid and begins to sink. From relying on the Lord, he turns back to reliance on himself. He immediately perceives his puniness before the power of the storm, and the storm nearly sweeps him away.

Часто, так само і з нами, коли ми стикаємося з кризами свого життя. So often, it is the same with us, when we face the crises of our lives. Instead of having our concentration on God, the Ultimate Reality, Who transcends all the evil and chaos in our lives, we focus instead on the evil and chaos. It seems powerful (and it is in comparison with us), but God, Who is no longer in view, is infinitely stronger. The Lord is the means to calm in the midst of trial both by example and agency.

It is an important point. The Lord is the means to patience under trial by example, because of His perfect and integral human life. The Holy Apostle Peter, the same who we see today walking on the sea by the Lord's power, wrote many years later in his first epistle: "When He [Christ] was made to suffer, He did not counter with threats, but gave Himself up to the one who judged Him unjustly." In the midst of His sufferings, the Lord was calm, full of peace, because He was certain that He was doing the will of His Father. The Prophet Isaiah described Him by means of prophetic vision. The prophet said, "I gave my cheeks to those who plucked my beard. Therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I shall not be confounded."

Господь Ісус є прикладом спокою та миру в розпалі випробувань, але Він також є агентом нашого миру. Святий Петро не тільки захоплювався Христовим спокоєм, бачачи, як Він ходив по воді серед бурі, але і Петро покладався на Ісуса, щоб дати йому такий самий спокій. The Lord Jesus is the example of calmness and peace in the midst of trials, but He is also the agent of our peace. Saint Peter not only admired the peace of Christ, seeing Him walk on the water in the midst of the storm, but Peter also relied on Jesus to give him the same peace. Only when Peter forgot that the Lord Jesus was the only source of that peace did he falter and sink. Peace and holiness are the Lord Jesus' work in us.

Опора на Господа Ісуса не означає, що нам не доведеться працювати. Як ми знаємо, у щоденному житті в цьому світі, віру важко підтримувати. Reliance on the Lord Jesus doesn't mean that we don't have to work. As we know from day to day life in this world, faith is strenuous to maintain. All of us are like Peter, getting out of the boat to walk on the water towards Jesus. Many of us falter and lose faith, on account of the trials and struggles, but also on account of the comforts, of this life. Only those who perseveringly call out to the Lord for help will be saved.
