У центрі сьогоднішнього євангельського читання – образ мідного змія, якого створив пророк Мойсей за вказівкою Божою. Кожен, хто був укушений смертоносними зміями в пустелі, міг вилікуватися, дивлячись на скульптуру змія. Мідний змій з Книги Виходу був встановлений на стовпі, і, таким чином, за словами Господа, він стає типом (прообразом, іншими словами) Розп’ятого Христа.

The gospel reading today centers upon the image of the bronze serpent, which the Prophet Moses made, at the instruction of God. Everyone who had been bitten by the deadly serpents in the desert could be cured by gazing upon the sculpted serpent. The bronze serpent of the Book of Exodus was mounted on a pole, and, thus, according to the Lord’s own words, it becomes a type (a prefiguring, in other words) of the Crucified Christ.

Today, let us focus our attention upon the image of the serpent. It would be impossible for us to meditate on this passage without thinking about the passage in the Book of Genesis, in which the Evil One takes the form of a serpent and deceives the progenitors of our race, Adam and Eve, into disobeying the commandment of God. The serpent in that passage is a deceiver, and everywhere throughout the Scriptures, the serpent is known for his cunning. In fact, the Lord Jesus Himself exhorts His followers to be “as cunning as serpents, but as innocent as doves.” Of course, we know that in all things the Lord Jesus is our model. If he tells us that we must be as “cunning as serpents, but as innocent as doves” it is because He is par excellence “as cunning as a serpent, but as innocent as a dove.” The context in which He commands us to be like serpents in Matthew 10:16 is the narration of what future persecutions will be like. He is telling us that we must be ready for persecution. We must be as cunning as serpents in a very particular way. We must be cautious under persecution, so that we rely solely on the Holy Spirit to provide our answer to every difficulty. In this way, according to the passage, the Gospel of Christ will be furthered.

На початку обман хитрого змія (Злого) був загибеллю нашого роду. Але чому Господь вибрав собі за образ лукавого змія? Це поезія Справедливості Всеблагого Бога. Втілення Бога-Слова призначене для того, щоб дати Злому та його силам відчути смак власних ліків на славу Божу. Втілення — це зі самого початку смілива рятувальна місія. Бог Слово сходить у Своє власне творіння і приймає людську природу. Коли Його пекельні вороги дивляться на Нього, вони бачать лише людину, бо Його людська природа служить прикриттям Його Божественної природи та Його справжніх намірів. Коли Його вороги хваляться: «Ми знаємо, хто Ти, Святий Божий», або коли вони вигукують: «Ти — Син Божий», вони абсолютно не розуміють справжнього значення цих виразів. Вони вважають, що Ісус є «Святим Бога» подібно до того, як пророк Мойсей був «Святим Бога», і вони вважають, що Ісус є «Сином Божим» у тому ж сенсі, що й пророк Давид «син Божий». Вони не знають вирішальної реальності. Від них приховано, що цей чоловік Ісус є Сам Бог. Насправді їхнє невігластво настільки глибоке, що вони грають на руку Йому, виконуючи Його план. Вони змовляються та планують знищити Його, не розуміючи, що знищення, яке вони планують для Нього, є Його перемогою та прославленням. Як каже про Нього святий Павло: «Він був убитий, що стосується плотського існування, але Йому було дано життя в царстві Духа». Все це наперед бачив цар-пророк Давид і написав про це в псалмах. Там він говорить про перемогу Господа у Його воскресінні з мертвих: «Тоді Господь прокинувся, немов від сну, як воїн, переможений вином. Він уразив Своїх ворогів ззаду і наклав на них вічну ганьбу». Страждання і смерть Господа були ефективною хитрістю. Подібно до тварини, що підстерігає, Він у відповідний час вискочив зі Свого сховку і завдав смертельного удару ворогам людства.

In the beginning, the deception of a cunning serpent (the Evil One) was the undoing of our race. But why would the Lord choose a cunning serpent as an image of Himself? It is the poetry of the Justice of the All-Good God. The Incarnation of God the Word is designed to give the Evil One and his forces a taste of their own medicine to the glory of God. The Incarnation is, from the beginning, a daring rescue mission. God the Word descends into His own creation and takes on human nature. When His infernal enemies look at Him, they see only a human being, for His human nature serves as a disguise of His Divine Nature and of His true intentions. When His enemies boast, “We know who you are, the Holy One of God,” or when they cry out, “You are the Son of God,” they have absolutely no idea about the true meaning of these expressions. They think that Jesus is “the Holy One of God” in an analogous way to the Prophet Moses being “the holy one of God,” and they think that Jesus is the “Son of God” in the same sense that the Prophet David was “the son of God.” They are ignorant of the crucial reality. It is hidden from them that this man Jesus is God Himself. In fact, so deep is their ignorance that they play into His hands, fulfilling His plan. They conspire and scheme to destroy Him, not realizing that the destruction that they plan for Him is His victory and glorification. As Saint Paul says of Him, “He was put to death as far as fleshly existence goes, but He was given life in the realm of the Spirit.” King David the Prophet saw all this beforehand and wrote about it in the Psalms. There he says concerning the Lord’s victory in His resurrection from the dead: “Then the Lord awoke as if from sleep, like a warrior overcome with wine. He struck His foes from behind and put them to everlasting shame.”  The Lord’s suffering and death was an effective ruse. Like an animal lying in wait, at the appropriate time, He sprang from His hiding place and dealt the death blow to the enemies of mankind.

Брати і сестри у Христі, ми повинні повірити в хитрості і віддати свою цілковиту вірність і любов до Бога хитрості. Brothers and sisters in Christ, we must put our faith in the ruse and give our total allegiance and love to the God of the ruse. He has wrought our salvation by means the rescue mission, the astounding reversal that stands now at the center of human history. He remains a God of reversals. With the eyes of faith we must learn to see that things are not as they appear. Our humiliations, our sufferings, our diseases, all our pains are actually for our good. Our spiritual enemies think they are destroying us by means of them; in truth, they are clothing us in glory.
