Людина: живе втілення милосердя The Human Being: The Living Incarnation of Charity

 

Сьогоднішнє читання стосується прав Бога, які Він має над людьми, тому що Він є Творцем. Він посилав Своїх посланців, пророків, щоб нагадати нам про Його права́, але ми не прислу́халися до них. Насправді ми ними зловживали. Таким же чином людський рід також знущався над Єдинородним Сином Божим, але це виявилося частиною Божого плану спасіння для всіх, хто повірить у Сина.

The reading today is all about the rights of God, which He has over human beings, because He is the Creator. He has sent His messengers, the prophets, to remind us of His rights, but we have not heeded them. In fact, we have abused them. In the same way, the human race also abused God’s only-begotten Son, but that turned out to be part of God’s plan of salvation for all who would put their faith in the Son.

Проста істина полягає в тому, що Бог полюбив нас, і Він закликає нас любити Його взаємністю, не тому, що Йому в будь-якому випадку потрібна наша любов, а тому, що життя в спілкуванні любові з Ним є виконанням Його наміру щодо нас. Це спілкування любові є «середовищем проживання», для якого Він створив людей. Він хоче, щоб ми жили в цьому середовищі, тому що це єдиний спосіб стати щасливими та повноцінними, починаючи з цього життя, але продовжуючи у майбутньому вічному житті. Іншими словами, бути улюбленими Богом і любити Його є метою нашого життя. У кожному з наших життів прояв цієї головної мети буде різним, але в його основі воно те саме. З іншого боку, якщо ми ігноруємо нашу справжню мету (яку визначає наш Творець, а не ми), якщо ми вибираємо жити для себе, а не для Нього, ми вільно розриваємо Його задум щодо нас і пожинаємо наслідки в житті, яке зрештою увінчане скорботою, а не радістю для якої Він створив нас.

The simple truth is that God has loved us, and He is calling us to love Him reciprocally, not because He needs our love in any way, but because living in a communion of love with Him is the fulfillment of His purpose for us. That communion of love is the “environment,” the “habitat” that He created human beings to live in. He wants us to live in that habitat, because it is the only way that we will be happy and complete, beginning in this life, but continuing in the eternal life to come. In other words, being loved by God and loving Him is our purpose in life. In each of our lives, the manifestation of that master-purpose is going to be different, but, at its heart, it’s the same. On the other hand, if we ignore our true purpose (which is determined by our Creator, not us), if we choose to live for ourselves rather than for Him, we freely frustrate His design for us and reap the consequences in a life that is ultimately crowned with sorrow rather than the joy, which He created us to know.

У читанні послання святий апостол Павло допомагає нам зрозуміти, як ми можемо виконувати своє головне призначення в житті. Він каже нам: «Кожний ваш вчинок слід робити з любов’ю». Отже, Павло, будучи великим святим і апостолом, вважає, що йому не потрібно бути більш відвертим, ніж це. Тим не менш, у наших обставинах, у культурі, в якій сама природа любові, чеснота любові, часто зловживається та неправильно характеризується, нам потрібно додати більше пояснень. Зрештою, всюди у цій культурі є гасла, які проголошують: «Любов є любов» і «Не має значення, кого ти вирішиш любити». Ці гасла свідчать про те, що культура не має уявлення про те, що насправді полягає в любові. Ці гасла називають любов'ю наймерзеннішу нечисть. Оскільки Бог є любов, це, безумовно, богохульство, святотатство і гидота перед Богом. Справжнє визначення любові полягає в тому, щоб любити Бога понад усе заради Нього і любити своїх ближніх, як самих себе, заради Бога. Справжня чеснота любові проявляється як необмежена любляча доброта до всіх інших.

In the epistle reading, the Holy Apostle Paul helps us to understand how we can begin to fulfill our master-purpose in life. He tells us, “Your every act should be done with love.” Now, Paul, being the great saint and apostle that he is, figures he doesn’t have to be any more explicit than that. Nevertheless, in our circumstances, in a culture in which the very nature of love, the virtue of charity, is often abused and mischaracterized, we do need to add more explanation. After all, there are slogans abroad in this culture, which proclaim, “Love is Love,” and “It shouldn’t matter, whom you choose to love.” These slogans show that the culture has no idea what the virtue of charity actually is. These slogans are calling the vilest impurities by the name of love. Since God is love, that is surely blasphemy, sacrilege and an abomination to God. The true definition of charity is loving God above all things for His own sake and loving our neighbors as ourselves for God’s sake. The true virtue of charity manifests as unlimited loving-kindness to all others.

Християнин — це справді реалізована людина (особливо святий), той, хто справді живе з метою, для якої Бог її створив. Якщо сказати те саме в дещо іншому, християнин є живим проявом любові. Людина має бути втіленою любов’ю. Це надзвичайно високий стандарт для нас, але його правда змушує нас зва́жувати всі наші слова та дії проти нього. Нам потрібно виробити звичку перевіряти свої слова та вчинки з огляду на головну мету. Нам було б легко почати робити те, що ми зазвичай робимо як вчинки любові, пропонуючи Йому все як багато маленьких дарунків. Таким же чином ми можемо запитати себе перед тим, як виконати якусь дію або сказати якісь слова, чи це любовні дії та слова. По-третє, ми можемо почати шукати можливості виявляти любов до інших заради Бога.

The Christian is the truly fulfilled human being (most especially the saint), the one who truly lives out the purpose for which God created him. To say the same thing in a slightly different we, the Christian is a living manifestation of charity. The human being is meant to be charity incarnate. That is an extremely high standard for us, but its truth compels us to weigh all our words and actions against it. We need to form the habit of examining our words and actions with our master-purpose in mind. It would be easy for us to begin to do the things we usually do as acts of love, offering everything to Him as so many little gifts. In the same way, we can ask ourselves before performing some action or saying some words whether these are loving actions and words. Thirdly, we can begin to look for opportunities to do loving things to others for God’s sake.
