Beloved brethren in Christ, praise, blessing and abundant thanksgiving be to Him Who called His Apostles and made them "fishers of people." We see today the way that He called His first Apostles away from their nets and began, in so doing, to give them new nets, for if it is necessary to use a net to catch fish, is it not also necessary to use a net to catch the souls of human beings? But what is the nature of such a spiritual net? Just as the external fish net is made of bonds all woven together, so too is the spiritual net made of solid bonds that transcend nature. From the beginning, the spiritual net was spread out in history, nature and Scripture, and now it must be taken up by its edges and pulled together, trapping every person who understands in good will. This spiritual net is the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the evidence of the Kingdom of Heaven already in this world. It is the presence of Christ everywhere and in everything.

Elsewhere in the Gospel According to Saint Matthew (13:47-53), the Lord Jesus tells us that the Kingdom of Heaven is mighty dragnet, cast into the sea, which collects everything in its path, suffering nothing at all to escape. He is its Director and primary Actor. By faith, we know that His designs are being accomplished. When we understand the things around us by the use of our minds, it is Christ that we understand, because He alone is intelligible. We know by faith that even atheist scientists, when they understand the laws and workings of the universe, they are understanding Christ (the Word of God) by means of Christ. The spiritual net is also spread out in Scripture, because from the beginning, just as with history itself, Christ is the meaning of the Scriptures in all their details. Everything in Scripture is fulfilled in Christ.

This is the description of the spiritual net of the Gospel. Today, through His Incarnation and through the calling of the Holy Apostles, Christ begins to draw the net together. It will collect everything. Nothing at all will escape. Even the enemies of God will be gathered up in this great net. At the end of this age, when everything has been gathered into the Kingdom of Heaven's net, the Lord Himself will take everything and everyone that is worthy from the net and give them the fullness of the Kingdom. That which is worthless, on the other hand, His enemies, both demons and men, will be discarded, eternally cast off into the outer darkness, the Hell of their own making.

But, beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, if we are witnessing the victory of Christ in our world, if the net of His Kingdom is being gathered together by its edges, then why do we seem to see evil winning all around us. Why do we seem to see the world getting worse and worse. This is only a perspective caused by our position. As a net is drawn together, what happens to all the things trapped within it? They all get closer and closer to one another. In just the same way, the net is bringing us into closer and closer proximity with the evils of this age. Just as the weeds grow closer and closer to the wheat as the growing season goes on and the harvest approaches, we also find ourselves surrounded by the greatest of evils-- demonic things that previous generations could not even have imagined. By the necessity forced upon by the net of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, we must face all these evils that previous generations of Christians had not known. We must be ready for the greatest temptations, because our allegiance to Christ the King must not waver. As the net becomes more and more drawn together, the enemies of God become more and more constrained, and they lash out in violence in a vain attempt to free themselves from God's encircling power. We must be strong in the grace of the Lord Jesus against all the attacks, which must come.

Just as the net works externally through history, nature and Scriptures, so does it also work internally in our own minds and our hearts. It is the Holy Apostle Paul, who tells us this. He describes the way that every thought must be brought into captivity to Christ (2 Cor. 10:5). He tells us: "Brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, do; and the God of peace will be with you." Amen! To have our minds on Christ is the only way to have peace in this evil age.
