Today, Christ is risen from the dead. We hear that expression so often that it hardly makes any impression on us at all. Nevertheless, it was and remains a momentous announcement to the world, because in every age the truth remains the same: Nobody returns from the dead. Even though the Hebrew scriptures are filled with references to the coming resurrection at the end of the world, even the Jews were far from expecting someone to rise from the dead in their own lifetimes. King David, for example, fasted and prayed for the life of his son, while the baby was still living, but as soon as the baby had died, then he rose from the ground and washed and took off the clothes of penance and mourning. When he was asked to explain his behavior, the king said, “There is nothing more that I can do. I will go to him, but he will not return to me.”

In another place, Christ Himself tells us concerning the greatness of the virtue of charity. He says, “Perfect love casts out fear.” Why should the perfection of charity eliminate fear from our lives? Because perfect charity is filled with faith in the resurrection. Fear of death is the basic fear. Those who do not fear death, because of the glory of the resurrection, are free to love God and their neighbors perfectly. In fact, the Letter to the Hebrews tells us that such believers in Christ can make heroic sacrifices for the sole purpose of increasing their glory in the resurrection.

Perfect love casts out fear, and perfect love is not an abstract idea. Perfect love is a Person, a Person, Who, as perfect love, contains all the other virtues as well. Today we worship Perfect Love, emerging from the tomb, just as King Solomon told us He would, when, in the Song of Songs, he told us, “Love is stronger than death.” We have seen Perfect Love create the world, enter the world as one of us, become the atoning sacrifice for us, and, if we are faithful, we shall see Perfect Love enthroned as king in the great feast at the end of the world.

Perfect Love commanded the Apostles to “make disciples of all nations.” What can it mean to be a student of Perfect Love, except to adhere to His teachings and love God and neighbor perfectly, even as the Savior told us in another place: “Be perfect as your Father in Heaven is perfect?” If we are students of Perfect Love, we must accept Love’s teachings and put them into practice through attention to our Teacher and emulation of Him. It is Perfect Love Who teaches us, and, therefore, when we attend to His teachings we should feel perfectly loved, and when we emulate Him, we should fear lest we love imperfectly. But who can love perfectly? Perfect Love can love perfectly, and He can do so in us and through us, if we consent in all things to His will.

We all know how to be students. We all know how to learn. First, we listen to the teacher. Second, we question the teacher concerning any things that are in doubt. Third, we put the teachings into practice by fulfilling the assignments that are given to us, striving to improve more and more with each passing task. In just the same way, we behave as students of Perfect Love. We must recognize our lives as manifestations of His will. Our assignments from Him are our day to day circumstances, which we lovingly accept and fulfill. Nevertheless, our ability to do so depends absolutely on listening and questioning our Teacher.

Пасха - це ще одне свято «Нового року», оскільки воно відкриває абсолютно нове сотворіння. З цієї причини, отці Церкви назвали неділю «восьмим днем». З нагоди нашого відродження у Христі, воскреслому з мертвих, нам потрібно зосередити свою увагу на способах стати досконалими учнями досконалої любові. Існують прості та практичні способи, за допомогою яких ми можемо посвятити себе до прослуховування нашого Вчителя, розпитуючи Його про речі, які є невизначеними, і застосовуємо себе до виконання Його волі у наших щоденних обставинах. Кожному з нас потрібен час, щоб прочитати Слово Боже, бо в цьому Він говорить нам. Нам потрібен час для молитви, бо в цьому ми говоримо з Ним, розпитуючи Його, щоб краще пізнати Його шляхи. Нарешті, нам потрібно підтримувати відчуття Його Присутності протягом нашого дня, в усіх наших обставинах, тому що присутність люблячого Вчителя постійно змушує нас змінювати своє серце на добро.

Pascha is another “New Year” celebration in a sense, since it inaugurates an entirely new creation. This is the reason the Fathers of the Church called Sunday “the Eighth Day.” On the occasion of our re-creation in Christ, risen from the dead, we need to focus our attention on ways to become perfect disciples of Perfect Love. There are simple and practical ways that we can rededicate ourselves to listening to our Teacher, questioning Him regarding things that are uncertain and applying ourselves to fulfilling His will in our daily circumstances. Each of us needs a time to read the Word of God, for in this He speaks to us. We need a time for prayer, for in this we speak to Him, questioning Him so as to better learn His ways. Finally, we need to maintain a sense of His Presence throughout our day, in all our circumstances, because the presence of the loving Teacher continually moves us to change our hearts to the good.
