The individual Christian can only be successful in the Christian life if he or she seeks to become like Christ, assiduously nourishing the seeds planted in him or her by Baptism and Chrismation. In this way, those seeds grow into the wholeness of life in the Holy Spirit, a life of participation in uncreated Virtue. This effort to nourish what has been planted in us by God is called repentance. If we are serious about it, always attentive to cooperating with God's grace, we quickly discover that repentance is a full-time job. Plus, we discover that we need a lot of help from God's grace in order to go forward in it. This is the reason why it is so necessary to us to have the encouragement of those who have gone before us, the saints, who have triumphed in the very battle, in which we are now striving.

Let us look today for such encouragement to the saint of today, the Holy Martyr Leontius. We can find abundant encouragement in this example, because Leontius was just an ordinary man, trying to fulfill his obligations to his God, his family and his profession, just like so many of us today. His desire to fulfill those obligations perfectly, became the source of friction with others, which led to all his sufferings. The fact is, if we are faithful to Christ, we will likely find the same to be true for us.

Leontius was a local military commander under the Emperor Vespasian. When the Emperor learned that Leontius was Christian, he dispatched two officers to go and arrest him. On their way, one of the officers, Hypatius fell suddenly very, very ill. Having stopped to rest at a wayside, the sick man soon fell into a troubled sleep. In a dream, an angel came to him and told him that if he wanted to recover from his illness, he should cry out three times, "O God of Leontius, have mercy on me!" When he woke from his dream, he told the other officer about it. They said the invocation together: "O God of Leontius, have mercy on us!" Instantly, Hypatius was cured of his illness. The two men continued on their journey, but not to arrest Leontius. Now, they wanted to learn about Christ and become Christians. Hypatius and the other man, Theodulus, were subsequently baptized by Leontius.

Unfortunately, when Vespasian's agent, Hadrian, learned that Hypatius and Theodulus had failed in their mission, and, instead, had become Christians, he order them to be severely scourged and then beheaded.

Hadrian still had to deal with Leontius, however. He submitted the saint to torture for many days. Finally, Leontius fell to the ground from exhaustion and his jailers beat him to death. Thus, he entered into the Heavenly Kingdom.

The moment we decide to live according to the commandments of Christ, imitating Christ as the source of our life, we will always meet with opposition and contradiction. This is the case, because this world is still under the sway of the demons. The world and its masters do not want us to follow Christ and be saved. They want us to shrink from fear of the sacrifices that we must make, in order to return to God through repentance. Nevertheless, God is so generous to us. Even the very smallest of these sacrifices is repaid by our God a hundredfold.

During Leontius' protracted torments at the hands of the Emperor's agents, the saint prayed to God again and again for the strength to endure the tortures for God's sake. Although Leontius had been known all his life for his great physical strength, the saint knew that this last challenge, this last contest, was so great that he could not rely on his own natural strength. He needed special help from God. This insight is perfect for us too. We can accomplish most anything that our circumstances require with the help of the natural strength that God has given us. However, we cannot achieve our salvation. For that, we need special help from God, which He will certainly give us if we ask Him. We must ask Him. Salvation is the whole purpose of this life. The reason we pass through this life is so that we can live with God for all eternity.
