In the Gospel reading today, the Prologue of the Gospel According to Saint John, the Son of God, Christ the Lord, is called Word, Life and Light. Certainly, in recent days, as we came to the end of Great Lent, we heard Him proclaim Himself "the Way, the Truth and the Life," and the "Resurrection and the Life" when He raised Lazarus from the dead. We can see from this evidence that these concepts are of the highest importance. They reveal key things about the identity of the Lord Jesus and are of the essence of our salvation.

The most important of these concepts is the Word, because Saint John's Gospel tells us that the Son of God is also called Word. The Son is the Word of the Father. When we look at the whole scope of salvation history, at the writings of the prophets, we see that the Word of God is always something active and creative. In fact, in many cases, the Word is depicted in the Holy Scriptures as a Person. In the Book of the Wisdom of Solomon, for example, we see the Word of God leap down from Heaven in the middle of the night to slay all the firstborn male children in the land of Egypt. Also, in the Book of the Prophecy of Isaiah, the Word is again described as a Person, sent forth from God, Who also returns to God. God says through Isaiah the prophet: "For, as the rain and the snow come down from the sky and do not return before having watered the earth, fertilizing it and making it germinate to provide seed for the sower and food to eat, so it is with the Word that goes from my mouth; it will not return to Me unfulfilled or before having carried out my good pleasure and having achieved what it was sent to do."

Second, we hear that this active and creative Word of God is Life. This is not surprising to us, because everywhere we see that it is the Word of God that engenders life. In the first chapter of the Book of Genesis, it is God's "Let there be..." which brings everything that exists into existence.

По-третє, ми чуємо від святого Івана, що Христос, Слово Боже, є Світлом, але в допоміжному сенсі, тому що Він є Світлом лише тому, що Він є Життям. Ось що говорить нам Іван: «Життя було Світлом для людей». Third, we hear from Saint John that Christ the Word of God is Light, but in a subsidiary sense, because He is only Light because He is Life. This is what John tells us: "the Life was the Light of men." When we are in a dark place, we cannot determine where we are or what meaning our surroundings have, nor can we determine the meaning of any object that is near to us. But when light enters that place, we clearly perceive all three of these things: we know where we are; we know the meaning of where we are; and we know the meaning of everything adjacent to us. In the same way, it is only Christ, the Word of God, which gives us this kind of knowledge. In Christ, we know that we are in the world that He has created; we know why He has created it and why He has created us in it; and we know the true purpose of the created things that surround us in the world. These three levels of insight are necessary for our salvation. What is the meaning that we perceive in the world, in our place in the world and in the natures of created things? Simply, it is Life. "The Life was the Light of men." The questions "from where do I draw my life?" and "what is the meaning of my life?" are the same. Our God, Creator and Redeemer, is our Life and the Meaning of all Life.

Про це Бог говорить нам: «Небо і земля промину́ться, але слова Мої не минуться». Усі наші пусті розваги, наші кар’єри, навіть наші сі́м’ї зникнуть. Тільки Христос воскрес із мертвих, щоб ніколи більше не вмирати.

So, this presents a challenge to us. The only authentic way to be human is to draw life and meaning from the Word of God. "Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God." Our sense of purpose, meaning and mission must come from the Word of God; and the Word of God must also be our nourishment, our life. From where, here and now, are we deriving the meaning and nourishment of our life? We would perhaps be surprised how many people read horoscopes and other superstitious nonsense to give them some sense of meaning, purpose and mission. There are still more people who are trying to nourish their souls with empty entertainments, soap operas, romance novels, sporting events, or even outright obscenity like pornography. Or are we trying to attain our sense of meaning, purpose and mission merely from career or family, apart from the guidance that can only come from the Word of God? About this, God tells us, "the heavens and the earth pass away, but my words will not pass away." All our empty amusements, our careers, even our families will all pass away. Only Christ is risen from the dead, never to die anymore.

Моліться з ним; боріться з ним. «О Христе, Слово Боже, Боже наш, зішліть на нас благодать Всесвятого Твого Духа в цей день славного Воскресіння Твого з Гробу. Нехай же Цей Дух ви́корінить у нас усяку скверну, кожну тінь і кожну перешкоду для просування Твого Світла. Через натхнення Духа нехай ми матимемо тверде́ знання нашого значення, нашої мети та нашої місії, засно́ваної та вдосконаленої в Тобі, Слові. Нехай ми щодня жи́вимо наші душі з роздумом над Твоїми словами, завжди більше й більше люблячи Тебе в них. У день Твого справедливого суду змилуйся над нами, бідними грішниками, і нагороди́ нас спадщиною в Твоїй Присутності навіки».

Brothers and sisters in Christ, base your life in the Word of God and nourish your souls with it. Pray with it; struggle with it. "O Christ, the Word of God, our God, we beg You to send down upon us the grace of your All-Holy Spirit on this day of your glorious Resurrection from the Tomb. May this same Spirit root out in us every defilement, every shadow and every obstacle to the progress of your Light. Through the inspiration of the Spirit, may we have a firm knowledge of our meaning, our purpose and our mission, founded and perfected in You, the Word. May we nourish our souls daily with meditation on your words, always loving You more and more in them. On the day of your just judgment, have mercy on us, poor sinners, and reward us with an inheritance in your Presence forever."
