Сьогодні в читанні Євангелія ми почули про те, як Господь Ісус покликав Своїх перших учнів, тих, які пізніше стануть Його апостолами, коли Він призначив членів колегії Дванадцятьох. Ми бачимо тут, в обох випадках – покликання Симона та Андрія і покликання Якова та Івана – що їхня відповідь була негайною і навіть нагальною. Today in the Gospel reading, we heard about the way that the Lord Jesus called His first disciples, those who would become His Apostles later on, when He designated the members of the college of the Twelve. We see here, in both cases– the calling of Simon and Andrew and the calling of James and John– that their response was immediate and even urgent. We find the theme of urgency and immediacy often the Scriptures in reference to answering the call of God.

Кличте Його, поки Він ще близько». Подібним чином пророк-цар Давид говорить у Псалтирі: «Якщо сьогодні ви почуєте Його голос, не зачерствійте вашими серцями». Цей самий вірш розглядає, тлумачить і викладає у всіх його різноманітних значеннях святий апостол Павло у своєму Посланні до євреїв.

There are biblical exhortations across the whole spectrum of Scripture that encourage God's people to respond to God with immediacy and urgency. The Prophet Isaiah tells the people of Judah: "Seek the Lord while He may be found. Call to Him while He is still near." In a similar way, the Prophet King David says in the Psalter: "If today you hear His voice, harden not your hearts." This same verse is examined, interpreted and expounded in all its various meanings by the Holy Apostle Paul in his Letter to the Hebrews.

It is in the Gospel According to Saint Luke that the Lord Jesus tells His hearers: "the man who fits his hand to the plough but keeps looking back is not fit for the Kingdom of God." This passage too shows the urgency and immediacy that is needed to respond to God when He calls us to follow Him. This is all the more true, because this passage is thematically connected and dependent upon a passage in the Old Testament. In that context, the Prophet Elijah is commanded to seek out and designate his successor shortly before he is to be taken up to Heaven in a fiery chariot. He finds Elisha plowing his fields. Coming up behind him, Elijah throws his mantle over the shoulders of Elisha. Elisha, although not without protest, follows him immediately.

Поклик Божий також має велике значення в нашому житті. Ми схильні думати про поклик Божий лише у зв’язку з такими великими речами, як життєві стани: шлюб, чернече життя, священство, дияконство. Але Бог кличе нас безперервно, знову і знову і навіть багато разів на день. Бог кличе нас до місця призначення Свого Царства, кличе нас із усього іншого для цієї мети. Але щоразу, коли ми отримуємо таке натхнення, наша відповідь має бути негайною, терміновою та повною.

The call of God has great urgency in our lives too. We tend to think of the call of God only in reference to the great things like states of life: marriage, monastic life, priesthood, diaconate. But God is calling us interminably, again and again and even many times a day. God is calling us to the destination of His Kingdom, calling us out of everything else for that purpose. Yet, each time we receive such an inspiration, our response must be immediate, urgent and complete.

These calls of God might take many forms. Sometimes, God is summoning us to His Kingdom by inspiring us to practice a certain virtue. In a case, for example, when we must wait or endure some annoyance, God calls us to practice the virtue of patience, and by means of growing in this virtue to taste of His Kingdom before it arrives. Every inspiration like this must be responded to with a loving heart, a heart that yearns for God and is willing to surrender everything else for Him.

As we become more and more aware of these invitations from God, we begin to realize that our lives are conversations with God in which He calls us, and we respond. It is not because we have to make our lives into such a conversation. No, that is the nature of our life as it is in itself. All we have to do is be silent and attentive, and we will see that it is so.

Ми знаємо це, тому що немає сенсу створювати плодоносне дерево, з якого не могли б їсти чоловік і жінка. Але Він дав їм заповідь випробувати їх. Вони відкинули Його ніжний заклик до послуху, вирішивши замість цього вступити в розмо́ву зі змієм, духом зла.

There are many stories in Scripture about people, who were called by God, but they lacked this urgency and immediacy. As a result, they squandered the Lord's graces and thwarted God's gracious designs for them. Our first parents, Adam and Eve, are a good example. God called them to practice the virtue of obedience by giving them a commandment. He eventually intended to allow them to eat of the tree, which He forbade to them. We know this, because there's no point to creating a fruit-bearing tree of which the man and woman would not be able to partake. But he gave them a commandment to try them. They rejected His gentle summons to practice obedience, choosing instead to engage in conversation with the serpent, the spirit of evil.

Справді, наведений вище приклад дає нам глибоке розуміння природи людського серця. Багато в чому серце схоже на купу сухого труту. Безсумнівно, що його щось запалить, тому що, по суті, він чекає, коли його підпалять. Ось чому ми повинні берегти серце і тримати подалі від нього іскри, що виходять від пристрастей. Indeed, the forgoing example gives us a great deal of insight into the nature of the human heart. In many ways the heart is like a pile of dry tinder. It is a forgone conclusion that it is going to be enkindled by something, because it is essentially waiting to be set ablaze. This is the reason why we have to guard the heart and keep the sparks that come from the passions away from it. God will call us to approach His Kingdom by practicing certain virtues. These inspirations are what must set our hearts on fire. We have to respond to them with the generosity of soul that comes from sincere love of God.
